Jada Pinkett Smith Reveals She Doesn’t Know How To Come To Terms With Trauma

Jada Pinkett Smith‘s childhood is far from being perfect, with an absent father who also happens to be an alcohol and drug addict, a mother who battled heroin addiction for over two decades, and being roped into doing and selling drugs at a young age. It also did not help that her father died from overdose in 2010.

With all these things working against her, Jada tried her best to heal from the trauma they inspired. Let’s just say that she’s still trying, but aren’t we all? According to her, she’s the “blessed child of two addicts.”

Jada Pinkett Smith – On Coming to Terms With Certain Situations That Deeply Impacted Her

For those who didn’t care to go through the book, “Worthy” is much more than a tale of her broken marriage with Will Smith.

It’s the story of a woman who has been through the darkest pits and managed to find her way back to the light. It’s about a woman who learned to accept the things that happened to her and make sense of her purpose.

During the London leg of her book promo tour, Jada sat down with Broadway star Cynthia Erivo at London’s Southbank Center and discussed the main themes of “Worthy.”

“It was the first time that I recognized how titles can make one blind to love,” she said. “Because he couldn’t show up and be the father I needed him, I wanted to write him off for that. Versus being able to see that Robsol was born for his destiny, his fate. He was not born just to be my father. I couldn’t see him past the title he wasn’t showing up for.”

“Even today, it’s difficult for me to embrace that idea of trauma,” the “Gotham City” star confessed to the crowd of people present. “Because I wasn’t aware of how certain situations I had encountered had impacted me. Like having a gun pulled on you was normal; stepping away alive was not.”

Regardless, she continued to believe that she was “inherently broken,” saying, “I was just trying to make it to 4pm” every day. At the time, she spent her time planning how to commit suicide, when to do it and where to do it.

Luckily, she was introduced to Ayahuasca plant just in time. “The universe, within a month, opened up an ayahuasca ceremony for me,” she said. “And I had four nights, excruciating nights, but I left that ceremony and I never thought about [suicide] again.”
