Jada Pinkett Smith Says Will Smith’s Oscar Slap Saved Her Marriage

Jada Pinkett Smith recently shocked her fans by admitting that she and Will Smith secretly separated years ago. And the two even reside in separate homes.

Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith once seemed to enjoy a perfect marriage. And for years, the golden couple posed lovingly together on the red carpet, smiling for the cameras.

However, in her new memoir and subsequent interviews, Jada confessed that the two secretly separated years ago.

But despite residing in separate homes, the actress told the Daily Mail that her relationship with Will actually improved after he slapped Chris Rock at the Oscars. And Jada also revealed if she would consider divorcing her husband. 

However, as the actress reflects on her life with Will, she admits that his decision to slap Chris changed everything. But Jada confessed, “I nearly didn’t even attend the Oscars that year.” However, now she feels “glad I did.” And Pinkett Smith also shared the scandal improved her marriage so much that she dubbed it “the holy slap now because so many positive things came after it.”

The scandal actually began with a honor for Will: Smith received a nomination in the Best Actor category in 2022 Oscars. And as Jada and her then-secretly estranged husband sat in the front row, host Chris Rock joked about Pinkett Smith’s shaven head. 

But Smith then climbed to the stage, slapping Rock’s face as the cameras filmed for the world-wide TV audience. And the actor yelled, “Keep my wife’s name out of your f****** mouth!” Jada felt stunned.

But after recovering from her husband slapping the Oscars host, Jada experienced a wake-up call. And she explained, “That moment of the s*** hitting the fan is when you see where you really are. After all those years trying to figure out if I would leave Will’s side, it took that slap for me to see I will never leave him. Who knows where our relationship would be if that hadn’t happened?”

And though Will mentioned Jada as his wife in yelling at Chris Rock, their marriage actually faced a crisis at the time. The two had secretly split six years before that infamous slap. And Pinkett Smith recalled considering killing herself at age 40 by driving off a cliff.

But Jada shared that the section of her memoir where she revealed that came as a shock to Will. However, the actress revealed that her children knew about her unhappiness. And she also shared that consuming a plant-derived psychoactive drink actually ended her suicidal reflections.

Because so-called plant therapy “breaks down the trivial concerns of the ego, it allowed me to experience incredible universal love,” said Jada. And she also credited it for making her “the mother I wanted to be. The children loved it.”

And Jada shared that Will represents everything she loves in a man. For the actress, that includes “artists, roughneck bad boys, intellectuals and in bed guys. Oh, Will is all of those things” she gushed. “He’s got it all.”
