James Cameron Shares Reason Next Avatar Installment Is Called 'Fire & Ash'

James Cameron‘s 2023 ‘Avatar: Way of Water’ was a billion-dollar box office hit, and even though it came many years after the first ‘Avatar’ movie, it was soon revealed that it would be followed by movies 3, 4, and 5.

At this year’s D23 event, the title of the third installment in the franchise was unveiled as ‘Fire & Ash.’ But what does it mean?

James Cameron – Says Extreme Emotions Drive the Characters In the Upcoming Third ‘Avatar’ Movie

In ‘Avatar: Way of Water,’ we were introduced to Sully’s family of two sons and two daughters. However, when danger strikes, Sully decides to take his family and run in order to protect them.

They then travel the long distance to a water tribe where they try their best to integrate to the Na’vi people’s culture. Sadly, this did not keep danger from following them.

Even though Sully tries his best to prevent a war, at the end of the movie, following the death of his first-born son, we see Sully determine to stand against the human invaders.

In the D23 event, Cameron unveiled the title of the third movie as ‘Fire & Ash.’ In the first movie, we were introduced to the people of Pandora, who are forest-dweller’s.

The second movie revolved around the Na’vi’s, who are sea people. According to Cameron, the third movie will focus on the Ash people, volcano-dwelling beings.

However, this is not the only reason for the title.

“Fire can represent hatred, violence, trauma, and possible misuse of power. There’s a lot of thematic stuff. What does ash represent? In my mind, ash represents the aftermath of all of that energy, which is grief and having to live with what you’ve done,” he explained at the event, in the presence of the movie’s lead stars, Zoe Saldana and Sam Worthington.

Speaking on what fans can expect from ‘Fire and Ash,’ the veteran filmmaker said: “The characters are so alive, and it feels so real. It’s also got very high emotional stakes — more than ever before. We’re going into really challenging territory for all the characters you know and love. The new film is not what you expect, but it’s definitely what you want.”
