Jamie Lee Curtis Apologizes For “Toilet Paper Promotion” Comments After Criticizing Marvel

Jamie Lee Curtis has taken to social media to retract her critical remarks about Marvel Studios made at San Diego Comic-Con.

The 65-year-old actress, during an interview with MTV, described the current phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) as “bad,” sparking a significant reaction online.

On Thursday, Curtis apologized on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “My comments about Marvel were stupid and I will do better. I’ve reached out to Kevin Feige and will no longer play in that mud slinging sandbox of competition we call the internet nor will I engage in the toilet paper promotion or game play that is designed for clicks not content or conversation.”

Curtis reinforced her apology on Instagram, sharing a clip of her “Borderlands” co-star Kevin Hart commending her leadership on set during an interview with IMDB at Comic-Con. She captioned the post, “If I’m a leader, then a leader shouldn’t talk shit about other collaborative art form creators.”

Fans’ Mixed Reactions And Curtis’s Previous Playful Feud With Marvel

Despite her apology, many Marvel fans might agree with Curtis’s criticism. After the record-breaking triumph of Avengers: Endgame (2019), Marvel’s Phase 3 ended on a high note, but post-Endgame releases have been a mixed bag, with a handful of flops and sequels underperforming at the box office.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania from earlier this year is just one of many examples; this February’s The Marvels, starring Brie Larson and Iman Vellani, earned only $84 million domestically, the lowest box-office total in the 20-year lifespan of Marvel’s Cinematic Universe.

In fact, Curtis has engaged in a playful feud with Marvel before. She’s compared the poster for Marvel’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022), which like ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ explored multiverse ideas, and which also came out just a few months after her film, with her own work.

In an Instagram post, Curtis highlighted the achievements of her film, calling it “TRULY MARVELOUS” and suggesting it outshone any Marvel release.

Celebration of “Everything Everywhere All at Once” And “Borderlands” Promotion

In an interview with People magazine in July 2022, Curtis clarified her comments, expressing that her intention was not to disparage Marvel but to celebrate the success of “Everything Everywhere All at Once.”

She stated, “I have nothing against Marvel as an entity. I’ve seen a lot of Marvel movies. What I was talking about is that ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ was a little movie that could… and [we] were able to tell a multiverse story that really touched people. What I was trying to talk about was it doesn’t have to be a Marvel movie in order to be a spectacle and to really move you.”

Curtis’s Comic-Con appearance was part of her promotional efforts for the upcoming video game adaptation “Borderlands,” which is set to release on August 9.
