Jenna Ortega, our very own Wednesday Addams, has always been very outspoken about her vision for the series. For example, she once hinted that she’d love the show’s second season to be darker and that she’d love her character to explore another side of her sexuality.
Who could have guessed that even as she plans to influence the smash Netflix show’s second season, she’d already made a big impact in its first?
Jenna Ortega – Reveals She Put Her “Foot Down” On the Set Of “Wednesday”
Not many stars can say that they’ve had to change a movie’s script on the fly, but Ortega boldly did what she felt was right in order to bring us the teen-goth series we love so much.
“I don’t think I’ve ever had to put my foot down more on a set in a way that I had to on Wednesday,” she told Dax Shepard on this week’s Armchair Expert podcast. “Everything that [Wednesday] does, everything that I had to play, does not make sense for her character at all. Her being in a love triangle made no sense.”
Of course, a big revelation like this about a very popular and beloved show is sure to drive all kinds of reactions from people.
Fans Have Mixed Reactions To Jenna Ortega Saying She Influenced the Script
This is not the first time that an actor has had to stand up to a script they don’t agree with, especially if they’re big fans of the show or movie being made. We remember when Henry Cavill publicly disagreed with how “The Witcher” writers strayed away from the original material. So, we know that there are actors who don’t always take a script at face value.
Turns out 20-year-old Jenna Ortega is one such actor.
Praising Ortega’s honesty, podcast host Jordan Crucchiola tweeted: “I really appreciate how candid Jenna Ortega seems to be about her experience working on Wednesday. You can be grateful for your success without being a hostage to ‘I’m just grateful to be here.’ I hope she keeps being very honest about her challenges.”
Journalist Mark Harris reacted negatively to it, writing: “No worries–after this interview, writers will be lining up to work with her!”
Writer Michael Sheridan added, “Yeesh… now I get why writers are getting a bit upset about her comments. The way this is framed… it appears she claims she knew better than the writers, better than Tim Burton, & she’s why the show was a hit. I don’t know if she meant that, but that’s how this reads.”
Michelle Dean, co-creator of Hulu’s “The Act” saw Ortega’s contributions in another way, writing, “well another dynamic going on here is that she’s a teenage girl being instructed by male writers and male directors about how a teenage girl might behave.”
At another time in the “Armchair Expert” podcast, the star opened up about a line she had axed from the show, saying, “There was a line about, like, this dress she has to wear for a school dance and she said ‘Oh my God, I love it. I can’t believe I said that, I literally hate myself.’ I had to go, ‘No.’ There was times on that set I almost became unprofessional in a sense where I just started changing lines.”
She also explained why she was invested in the script, adding, “I grew very, very protective of her. You can’t lead a story and have no emotional arc.”
However, shortly after the podcast episode aired, Ortega deleted her Twitter account.
