Jennifer Aniston’s Joke About Brad Pitt’s Divorce, So Unexpected

As the “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” marked its final episode on Thursday, May 26, Ellen DeGeneres thought it’ll be best to have Jennifer Aniston as the show’s final guest while she bids it goodbye after its 19 seasons on air.

It might have been kind of a déjà-vu moment for Aniston as Aniston was the first guest to debut on The Ellen DeGeneres Show when it premiered in 2003, 19 years ago. Although Aniston has appeared in the show 20 times, it was a wonder to her how fast the year went by.

“Oh, where does 19 years go?” Aniston asked. “I don’t understand.”

Aniston who has experience with saying goodbye to shows, for example when she starred in the sitcom “Friends” as Rachel Green, the show that went on for 10 years from 1994-2004 before it came to an end, Aniston knows how emotional these things can be. When Ellen asked Aniston how she dealt with the ending of Friends after its 10-year run, joked that she first had a divorce, then went to therapy.

“I wanna talk about the ending of Friends,” the host says to her. “What did you do to deal with that?”

Aniston laughed before comically sighing and saying, “Oh, the ending of Friends. Well, I got a divorce and went into therapy,” a nod to her public divorce from ex-lover Brad Pitt in 2005. The pair, who were easily one of the internet’s favorite couples in the early aughts, got married in 2000 before announcing their split five years later.

“Then I did a movie called The Break-Up,” she went on, referring to her 2006 hit with costar Vince Vaughn. “I just leaned into the end. I was just like, ‘You know what, guys? Let’s make this a completely new chapter. Let’s just end everything and start new.’ It worked great.”

When “Friends” ended in 2004, Aniston and her then-husband Brad Pitt divorced in 2005 after nearly five years of marriage. After their divorce, Aniston and Pitt went on to date and wed Justin Theroux and Angelina Jolie, respectively, though they both ultimately ended up splitting from their spouses.

Pitt wed Angelina Jolie in 2014, and she filed for divorce in 2016 (they were declared legally single in 2019). As for Aniston, she wed Justin Theroux in 2015 and they announced their split in 2018, later divorcing.

But, over the years, Pitt and Aniston have remained close friends, with her lighthearted quip a clear sign that she’s not afraid to poke fun at their past. In fact, the pair have appeared so amicable that they’ve repeatedly sparked rumors — or, perhaps, wishful thinking from fans — that reconciliation was in the cards.

Perhaps most memorably, was when the two reunited at the 2020 Screen Actors Guild Awards and worked fans into a frenzy.

However, in an interview with Howard Stern a few months later, Aniston shut down the speculation, saying that she and Brad were still just friends. “It was absolutely fun,” she said. “Brad and I are buddies. We’re friends.”

“We speak, and there’s no oddness at all, except for everyone that probably watched it and was wanting there to be, or assumed there to be,” she said seemingly of all the discourse around the imagined tension between the two. “We had fun, and it was for a great cause.”

Jennifer Aniston — On How She Feels About Her Marriages

Aniston told ELLE in 2018 that she considers her marriages “very successful.” As she put it, “When they came to an end, it was a choice that was made because we chose to be happy, and sometimes happiness didn’t exist within that arrangement anymore.”

Theroux told Esquire in April 2021, “Like it or not, we didn’t have that dramatic split, and we love each other, I’m sincere when I say that I cherish our friendship. We can not be together and still bring each other joy and friendship. Also, she makes me laugh very, very hard.”
