From Billionaire To Zero: Elizabeth Holmes To Lose Her Impressive Net Worth And Freedom

Earlier this month, Holmes, 37, was found guilty of fraud and conspiracy by a federal jury in California.

She faced up to 11 counts of fraud for false claims made to investors and patients of her Silicon Valley blood-testing company Theranos. The jury handed down a partial verdict, finding Holmes guilty of four of the 11 charges: three counts of wire fraud and one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud.

Holmes first landed in the spotlight in 2014 as the founder and CEO of health-care startup Theranos, which she advertised as possessing a technology that could run hundreds of medical tests using just a few drops of blood.

For years, she was able to get away with her web of lies until she came under the radar of Wall Street Journal journalist Carreyrou. The journalist reported in 2015 that the machine Holmes was selling – named the Edison – did not do the things it was claimed to do. He disclosed that the company was actually using outside technology and other subterfuge to fake positive test results.

Carreyrou was able to gather enough evidence to lead the federal authorities to investigate Holmes, indicting her in 2018 and seizing her wealth.

Her story was the subject of the HBO documentary “The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley”. Hulu’s limited series “The Dropout” will star Amanda Seyfried, 36, in the lead as Elizabeth Holmes. The series will debut on March 3.
