Jesse Williams’ Nude Video Is All Over the Internet, But It’s Not Bringing Him Down

Jesse Williams’ Says It’s His Job To Be Nude Onstage Every Night “No Matter What”

The 40-year-old Tony Award nominee recently shared his thoughts on the video of his full-frontal nude body parts, taken as he played his character in his Broadway debut production of “Take Me Out”.

Talking to the Associated Press, he said that he’s obligated “to go out there every night, no matter what”, so he’s not “down about [the video]”.

The support he received when the video was leaked was not lost on him, and he noted: “we do need to keep advocating for ourselves. And it’s wonderful to see a community push back and make clear what we do stand for, what we don’t.”

“Theater is a sacred space, and everybody doesn’t understand that,” Williams said. “Everybody doesn’t necessarily respect or regard that in a way that maybe they should, or we’d like.”

Speaking on his stage nudity, he said that he understands why his character has to be so during that scene, adding that it “makes sense”. He added: “It’s not salacious. It serves the story. It puts the audience in an interesting position to relate, to empathize with, the characters.”

Jesse Tyler Ferguson was one of many who rebuked the video leak, writing on Twitter: “I’m appalled by the disrespect shown to the actors of our company whose vulnerability on stage ever[y] night is crucial to Take Me Out”.

“Anyone who applauds or trivializes this behavior has no place in the theater which has always been a safe space for artists & audience members,” Ferguson added.

Actors’ Equity Association President Kate Shindle also spoke out against the leak, calling it “sexual harassment and an appalling breach of consent”.
