Johnny Depp Reportedly “Invented A Language” In Upcoming Movie Role

Johnny Depp Reportedly “Invented A Language” In Upcoming Movie RoleJohnny Depp is continuing to plot his comeback to mainstream Hollywood following his defamation battle with Amber Heard. He returned to the big screen in the French-language period drama ‘Jeanne Du Barry,’ where he played King Louis XV, produced and directed by Maïwen, who also starred in the movie as King Louis XV’s lover.

This time, while we won’t be seeing his face, we will indeed be hearing his voice, even if we don’t understand all or half of what it’s saying.

Johnny Depp – To Play A Gibberish Speaking Puffin In New Role

According to reports, Depp has managed to invent a new language for his new role in an upcoming animated movie ‘Johnny Puff: Secret Mission’ that will land in seven different theaters on July 17 before a move to VOD.

While it may not be a return to the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ as fans are hoping for, Depp’s run in feature animation has served him well – remember 2005’s ‘Corpse Bride’ and 2011’s ‘Rango.’

In his new role, Depp voices a fedora-wearing puffin who goes to battle with the evil Otto von Walrus, while living in a town in the arctic.

In a featurette about the film, Depp says, “I thought it would be great to invent a language for the character. I thought the only move now is to mix my dialogue with the actual sound of a puffin.”

If you remember Depp’s fluent gibberish speaking in ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl,’ you’d know that he’s well up to the task.

‘Johnny Puff: Secret Mission’ is a spinoff of the streaming series ‘Puffin,’ which is produced by Rome-based Iervolino Entertainment. Premiering in 2020, the original series also features vocal talents from Depp.

Apart from arriving in theaters, fans can also enjoy the new feature at home through Fandango, iNDEMAND, Dish Network and DirecTV.

This is coming after Depp’s ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ franchise co-star Geoffrey Rush – Captain Hector Barbossa – praised the star as ‘irreplaceable’ for the franchise.

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer also recently defended Depp amid reboot rumors, saying that if there’s a story that works for Depp’s character, Jack Sparrow, the studio would be glad to have him step back into his epic and beloved pirate character.
