If you can shift your mind back to that 2022 defamation trial between Depp and ex-wife Amber Heard, you might remember that Johnny Depp was the one who came out of the defamation case with the most public support behind him.
The result of this is that while Amber Heard is fading into obscurity, Depp keeps plotting his Hollywood comeback one project at a time.
Well, Depp’s lawyers are here to tell us why he managed to garner that amount of positive support from the general public, and it had nothing to do with whether he was innocent.
Johnny Depp’s Lawyers On How Humor Humanized The ‘Pirates Of The Caribbean’ Star For the General Public
2022 was the year people got to see Depp and Heard take themselves to court and tear each other down in every possible way, and while some may say that there were no winners in the defamation case, it’s more or less clear that the public’s sympathy tilted more towards Depp.
It was one of the most publicized cases, with cameras in the courtroom capturing every proceeding.
In a new program, ‘Interrogation Raw: Celebrity Under Oath,’ which aired on Thursday, Dec. 26, two of Depp’s lawyers, Benjamin Chew and Jessica Meyers, opened up about the strategic approach they employed to make sure Depp came out the winner, both in the eyes of the law and that of the general public.
“Johnny’s use of humor really undermined whatever serious point Amber’s counsel was trying to make,” says Chew. “We wanted to humanize Johnny before the jury so they could understand why hitting the woman he loved was something that he’s just not capable of.”
“But,” he recalls, “the one thing that we’re concerned about is whether he might lose his temper. The other side is gonna do everything possible to get Johnny to show anger.”
Chew further explains, “One of the things that lawyers try to do on cross-examination is to maintain control of the witness. That’s something that Johnny simply did not allow [Heard’s attorney Ben Rottenborn] to do.”
Lawyer Reveals Johnny Depp’s True Reaction To Victory Over Amber Heard In Defamation Case
As for Depp’s reaction to his victory, Chew revealed on the special that the actor was so excited, he acted like a kid about it. “He was elated, and he sounded as if the weight of the world was off of his shoulders,” he recalls. “I mean, he sounded like a kid. He was thrilled.”
Depp went on tour immediately after the case rounded up and showed his gratitude to his supporters in many different ways.
This is coming after Heard waded in on the ongoing Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni controversy in a rare public statement. “Social media is the absolute personification of the classic saying ‘A lie travels halfway around the world before truth can get its boots on,’” Heard told the NBC News. “I saw this firsthand and up close. It’s as horrifying as it is destructive.”
