Katherine Heigl loves laying all her cards on the table. Six months into dating her now-husband Josh Kelley, she told him of her intention to adopt a child. Having grown up with an adopted sister, who she loves and is very close to, she’d already made up her mind that she’ll want to begin her family that way as well.
I 100% stan Kelley’s response.
Katherine Heigl – On Wanting Her Family To Mirror the One She Came From
In a recent interview for the February 2023 issue of “Red”, the 44-year-old “Firefly Lane” star opened up about the first time she told Josh Kelley about her desire to adopt a child.
It was something she said she needed to discuss with anyone she was getting serious with because her heart was set on adopting her first child.
“About six months after meeting my now-husband I was, like, ‘I’d better get a few things straight now: marriage and having a family are both really important to me; starting a family with adoption is also really important to me.’ “
“‘If those things don’t speak to you, we should part ways,'” the Grey’s Anatomy alum said of finally opening up to Kelley six months into their relationship. “Luckily, he was, like, ‘I’m down with that!’ “
In case you don’t know, Heigl “was born into it” as her older sister was adopted from South Korea before she was born. “I wanted my family to look like the one I came from.”
Why wouldn’t she? Heigl is such a sucker for her older sister.
Katherine Heigl On Starting A Family And Building A Kelley Empire
Heigl and Kelley met on the set of his 2005 music video “Only You” and tied the knot in December 2007 in Park City, Utah.
“I always thought I’d be scared, but I’m ready,” Kelley said of her enthusiasm to start a family and begin the next phase of her career ahead of their wedding. “I’m 27, and I feel I’ve done more than most people will do in a lifetime. I’m ready to settle down, start a family and build my Kelley empire.”
In September 2009, the couple became parents to Naleigh, now 14 – adopted from South Korea. In 2012, they adopted Adelaide, now 10, and in 2017, they gave birth to Joshua.
In her interview with Red, Heigl also touched on how she felt holding daughter Naleigh for the first time. “The moment they handed Naleigh to me, I was her mother,” Heigl said. “I knew I would shield her with my life. It doesn’t matter if they hand a child to you from your body or off a plane; they are yours and you are theirs.”
