Known as a staple on the red carpet and a familiar face at fashion shows, Holmes has earned her reputation as a modern fashion icon. Her approach? Embracing her own unique style.
Navigating The Spotlight On Fashion Choices and Maintaining Autonomy in Hollywood
In a recent interview with Town & Country published on August 13, the 45-year-old actress shared her perspective on the increasing focus on actors and their fashion choices.
“Fashion is really big, and it didn’t used to be. As an actor, you weren’t necessarily photographed all the time on the street. It’s different now, and it’s flattering, but it doesn’t change how I live or dress,” Holmes explained to the publication.
She emphasized her commitment to maintaining autonomy over her choices, saying, “I’m adamant about having a life and not letting this industry dictate decisions as simple as what I wear or as complicated as what I do. You don’t want to be afraid of anything, right?”
A.P.C. Collaboration: A Blend Of Style And Simplicity
Holmes’ willingness to wear what she pleases—like the memorable Khaite cashmere bra she sported while hailing a New York City taxi—eventually led to her collaboration with A.P.C.
In June, Holmes and the French luxury brand introduced a collection characterized by its sophisticated, minimalist, yet undeniably chic design.
“I did approach this collection with the idea of it being a complete wardrobe,” Holmes stated in a press release. “One can mix and match the pieces to create many different looks that suit one’s individual style. There are day looks and night looks. Professional and playful. Suits, skirts, jeans, flats, heels, jackets.”
Interestingly, the standout item in the collection wasn’t an article of clothing but a $795 quilt, designed by her mother, which Holmes proudly modeled in a topless photoshoot.
“My mom has made me many quilts, all of my siblings and [her] grandkids. And there’s a difference when you’re sleeping under your mother’s work,” she shared in a June 1 interview with the Washington Post.
Balancing Career And Personal Choices
Despite her long-standing career in Hollywood, Holmes continues to resist letting the industry dictate her choices—whether in her projects or her wardrobe.
In her interview with Town & Country, she reflected on the changes in the industry, especially the heightened attention to her outfits due to social media.
Holmes also discussed her ability to be more selective with the roles she takes on, choosing projects that resonate with her passions.
“Do I have 20 scripts at my door, all with the green light? No. Would that make life easier? Yes. Is that unrealistic? Yes,” Holmes said, adding, “Everybody has to find their interesting story, try to put it together, and make poetry out of things. There’s a lot of thought that goes into the projects I work on, but at the end of the day, you still want to create something that people will respond to. You’re always at the whim of someone.”
From her breakout role as Joey Potter on Dawson’s Creek to her current endeavors in acting, producing, directing, and fashion, Holmes has certainly evolved. She even launched her own production company, Lafayette Pictures, further solidifying her diverse career.
