The dictionary describes “satire” as “a literary device that ridicules its subject often as a means of provoking or preventing change or highlighting a shortcoming in the work of another. Humor, irony, and exaggeration are often used to aid this.” And Katy Perry is now using this word to describe her latest single, “Woman’s World.”
Katy Perry Describes Her Single As “Very On the Nose”
“It’s a woman’s world and you’re lucky to be living in it,” Perry sings in the chorus of her anthemic single – her first since album ‘Smile.’
Perry has been known for her empowerment anthems throughout the years – no one can deny the power of “Fireworks” and “Roar” – but in recent years, she has seemed to focus on women empowerment and upliftment. Remember “What Makes A Woman” from ‘Smile?’
This time, fans are convinced that if empowering women was what she wanted to do, she was a thousand marks off the shot. In fact, if you twisted your head an angle, it almost looked like she’s mocking women. And she was inspired to do that after welcoming her daughter Daisy?
One fan reacted to it on X, writing, “It was co-written by six people, four of whom are men. It’s produced by three men, one of whom is Dr Luke, who was accused of sexual, physical, and emotional abuse by Kesha. The video is also directed by a man. LOL.”
Most other fans had like-minded opinions. Apart from the song not having much to boast lyrically, the video was perhaps the one that peeved fans the most.
However, Perry explained that the idea was not meant to be offensive, but to be “sarcastic.”
In a set video, she said, “We’re being a bit sarcastic with it… It’s very slapstick, very on the nose. And with this set, it’s like we, ooh, we’re not about the male gaze, but we really are the male gaze. And we’re really overplaying it, which is like a reset for me, and a reset for my idea of the feminine divine.”
She captioned the clip, “YOU CAN DO ANYTHING! EVEN SATIRE.”
Another thing that fans didn’t like was that she continued to work with Dr. Luke after Kesha accused him of drugging and raping her.
