Katy Perry has found herself at the center of a heated controversy, facing backlash from the family of Carl Westcott, an 85-year-old disabled veteran, over a high-profile real estate dispute.
What began as a legal battle over a Montecito mansion has escalated into a war of words. Westcott’s family accuses the pop star of displaying “zero empathy” and prioritizing wealth over human decency.
The Origins of the Dispute
In 2020, Perry and her fiancé, Orlando Bloom, purchased Westcott’s lavish 8.9-acre Montecito estate for $15 million. At the time, Westcott, a successful entrepreneur known for founding 1-800-Flowers, had signed the contract to sell the property.
However, just days later, Westcott attempted to back out, citing severe health issues and the effects of painkillers from a recent surgery, which he claimed impaired his judgment.
According to legal documents, Westcott’s attorneys argued that his age, frailty, and medication left him in an unsound state of mind when he agreed to the sale. His family contends that he was not in the right frame of mind to make such a significant financial decision.
Katy Perry’s Legal Victory
Despite Westcott’s claims, Perry’s legal team maintained that the businessman was fully capable of consenting to the deal and simply regretted the decision after struggling to find a suitable replacement property. The court sided with Perry, and in December 2023, a judge ruled in her favor, upholding the sale agreement.
By May 2024, Perry officially took possession of the sprawling mansion, a stunning 9,285-square-foot compound boasting eight bedrooms, 7.5 bathrooms, a tennis court, a pool, and two guesthouses. However, instead of the saga ending there, another chapter began.
The $6 Million Lawsuit
Following her legal victory, Perry filed a lawsuit against Westcott, demanding $6 million in damages. The lawsuit claims Westcott owes her compensation for alleged property damages and lost rental income.
Westcott’s family, already reeling from the court’s decision, has reacted outrageously, branding the singer’s actions as “unforgivable.”
Chart Westcott, the veteran’s son, has been vocal about his family’s disappointment, slamming Perry’s legal pursuit as an act of “greed.” Speaking to The Sun, he accused the singer and her legal team of displaying a lack of compassion.
“She has no sense of fair play, no empathy, zero empathy, quite the opposite,” he stated. “The worse the condition my father is in, the harsher they’ve been in trial.”
Westcott, who suffers from Huntington’s disease, has been bedridden for over 18 months, a fact his family argues should have prompted Perry to reconsider her legal actions.
Chart further criticized the pop star for what he described as “entitled celebrity behavior,” questioning why someone of her wealth and status would continue to pursue financial compensation from an ailing elderly man.
“If an old man apologizes and says he made a mistake [about the house sale], and she’s a rich pop star who can buy any other house in the world, you’d think she would let the old man go on his way,” he said.
Mounting Tensions
The legal battle has become even more contentious, with Perry reportedly enlisting a team of 25 experts to assess the home for damages.
Meanwhile, Westcott’s family has accused her business manager, Bernie Gudvi, of handling the case with undue aggression. In response, Perry’s team has accused the Westcotts of attempting to “turn the trial into a media circus.”
Westcott’s legal team has also sought to subpoena Orlando Bloom to testify, a move Perry’s manager claims is unnecessary and aimed at harassing the actor. As the courtroom drama continues, Perry herself is expected to testify in the upcoming damages phase of the trial.
Public Backlash
Beyond the courtroom, the case has ignited public debate over celebrity privilege and fairness. Many have questioned why Perry, a global superstar with an estimated net worth of over $300 million, would continue to aggressively pursue financial damages from an elderly veteran battling a debilitating disease.
“This is such a small deal to be worried about,” Chart remarked. “It’s a matter of privilege—her lawyers and her business manager are dealing with it, and she probably doesn’t even care.”
This case has become more than just a real estate dispute; it represents a broader discussion about power, privilege, and ethical responsibility.
Whether Perry’s lawsuit is justified from a legal standpoint remains a matter for the courts, but in the court of public opinion, the optics are far from favorable.
As the final phase of the trial approaches, all eyes will be on Perry and Westcott’s family. Will the singer push forward with her multimillion-dollar claim, or will public pressure and mounting criticism lead to a change of heart?
