Kelly Clarkson’s Promise To Her Kids Keeps Her From Replacing Katy Perry On American Idol

Kelly Clarkson's Promise To Her Kids Keeps Her From Replacing Katy Perry On American IdolKelly Clarkson may have sprung from ‘American Idol’ but she is not looking forward to returning to the show in the role of a judge anytime soon. At the 51st Daytime Emmy Awards, the “Stronger” hitmaker explained why that is.

Kelly Clarkson – Says Reason She Quitted ‘The Voice’ Was Reason She Won’t Join ‘American Idol’ As Judge

After seven fantastic seasons on ‘American Idol,’ Katy Perry said goodbye to the show with one last moving performance that saw her pay tribute to her time on the show.

As the ‘American Idol’s’ first ever winner, fans are looking to Kelly Clarkson to fill the void left by Katy Perry, but she isn’t up for the task.

While she would no doubt love to be a part of the creative show that set her on her path to becoming one of the most successful singers of our generation, she wants to make more time for her children: daughter River Rose, 10, and son Remington “Remy” Alexander, 8.

“No. No. I can’t do that, only because I promised my kids,” the daytime talkshow host said in reply to a question on whether she would be taking over from Perry. “I was like, ‘I wanna be there as much as I possibly can.’ And it would put me in L.A.”

She further explained that she’s been feeling the need to be more present in the lives of her children following her divorce from ex-husband Brandon Blackstock.

This mindset also inspired her to quit her coaching role on ‘The Voice’ after spending nine seasons on the singing competition show.

“That’s why I had to quit [the show],” she added to ET, “which I love that team. And I miss them so much.”

Kelly Clarkson – On Reason Her Last Four Seasons On ‘The Voice’ Were Painful

Clarkson had previously shared that her final years on ‘The Voice’ weren’t as happy as it should have been. The reason for this was that it saw her suppressing most of her emotions and faking smiles for the camera.

“Full disclosure, I put on a smile a lot of those times because I was struggling a lot in my personal life,” she admitted. “I’ve learned a lot about what I’m capable of handling and also what you should not handle. That was me saying ‘bye’ to The Voice and having this big move. I love that family, but I was like, ‘I’m struggling. I can’t smile anymore. I don’t feel like smiling.’”

Apart from leaving the show, the 42-year-old’s move to New York also put her in a more mentally sound place than before.

“I feel like a weight has lifted,” she added. “That move was very needed. I think the thing I’m most excited about with season 5, on a selfish level, is just showing up to work smiling and actually meaning it. That’s a beautiful gift that you don’t realize until you’re out of it.”
