Kevin Costner Says Taylor Sheridan Took Ideas From Horizon When Writing Yellowstone Spinoff 1883

If you ask Kevin Costner about the similarities existing between ‘Horizon’ and the ‘Yellowstone’ spinoff ‘1883,’ he’ll tell you it’s possible Taylor Sheridan may have “borrowed” ideas from the upcoming movie ‘Horizon’ when penning the script for ‘1883.’ The problem is that Costner doesn’t believe the scriptwriter will ever admit to doing it.

Before the great Kevin Costner and Taylor Sheridan fallout, the duo were once on very good terms.

Even though neither Costner nor Jon Baird – Costner’s ‘Horizon’ co-writer – were credited as writers on the epic Western drama ‘1883,’ Costner still believes Sheridan could have been inspired by ideas from ‘Horizon.’

I know what you’re thinking; if ‘1883’ premiered in 2021, a good three years before ‘Horizon: An American Saga,’ which is still to premiere on June 28, how can the former have influenced the latter? Well, Costner claims Sheridan read the script in 2019.

“So I don’t know if there’s any duplications there,” Costner said, referencing the eight-episode ‘Yellowstone’ spinoff that explored the westward US expansion in the late 19th century through the eyes of the first Dutton settlers.

“Whether he borrowed something, only he’d have to admit to,” he told IndieWire.

There’s undoubtedly some similarities between ‘1883’ and Sheridan’s passion project, especially since they both explore the Wild West, with an ensemble of German and Romani immigrants, Comanche natives, and Black cowboys supporting the story.

‘1883’ tended to focus heavily on the first members of the Dutton family as they journeyed through Great Plains to the Wild West before settling in Montana to establish what eventually became the modern day Yellowstone Ranch.

Costner’s tale will span the four years of the American Civil War and will “explore the lure of the Old West and how it was won—and lost—through the blood, sweat, and tears of many.”

Costner also opened up about his future playing the Dutton family patriarch in the hit show, saying he’d be open to coming back if Sheridan wants him to.

“I know they’ll probably do that without me,” he told IndieWire.

“I’m open to coming back,” he added, echoing his previous sentiments earlier this year. “But I basically have to see what the scripts are about. But now ‘Horizon’ has my first position.”
