Following the documentary’s release, some of his peers in the movie industry – Liam Neeson, Sharon Stone and others – came out in his defense.
In his first public reaction to the support, the star also touched on his hopes ‘cancel culture’ will end.
Kevin Spacey = On How ‘Cancel Culture’ Undermines the “Tremendous Amount of Conversation About Redemption”
Channel 4’s documentary was a huge blow at a time when the two-time Oscar winner was trying to creep out from the shadow of the years of court battles and find his footing again. The documentary was especially hurtful to Spacey he promised to “fight back.”
But the thing isn’t just about the documentary, it’s what it brought. And what it brought is ten new sexual misconduct allegations.
Speaking on The Lex Fridman podcast, Spacey proclaimed that there’s no forgiveness in Hollywood. He did share hopes that cancel culture will soon fade allowing “common sense [to] get back to the table.”
As he promised to do, once Spacey Unmasked premiered in the UK on May 6 and 7, he released a lengthy 20-minute response, titled “Kevin Spacey: Right of Reply,” on X.
Now speaking to Fridman, Spacey confessed that his private life hasn’t been all that righteous, but it doesn’t equate to him letting these attacks continue.
“I live in an industry in which there is a tremendous amount of conversation about redemption, from a lot of people who are very serious people in very serious positions who believe in it,” Spacey told Fridman. “That guy who finally got out of prison who was wrongly accused … We see so many people saying, ‘Let’s find a path for that person. Let’s help that person rejoin society.’”
“But there is an odd situation if you are in the entertainment industry, you are not offered that kind of a path,” he continued. ”And I hope that the fear that people are experiencing will eventually subside and common sense will get back to the table.”
Since 2017, Spacey hasn’t worked in Hollywood, but he currently has a few independent projects lined up. Speaking on the fear surrounding ‘Cancel Culture’ and why it is so pervasive in Hollywood these days, Spacey revealed that it’s not an inherent Hollywood problem.
“I don’t think it’s about the industry. I think it’s about our time,” Spacey said on the podcast. “I think it’s the time we are in. And people are very afraid. They are literally afraid that they’re going to get canceled if they stand up for someone who has been. We’ve seen this many times in history, this is not the first time it’s happened.”
Kevin Spacey – Apologizes For His Mistakes, Says Many Allegations Against Him Aren’t True
Spacey also took the time to apologize for those things he did do “that were wrong.”
“There are a number of things that I’ve been accused of that simply did not happen, and I can’t say, and I don’t think it would be right for me to say, ‘Well, everything I’ve been accused of is true,’” Spacey explained. “Because we’ve now proven that it isn’t, and it wasn’t. But I am perfectly willing to accept that I had behaviors that were wrong, that I shouldn’t have done and that I am regretful for.”
