Kim Kardashian Joins The Debate On The Homework Load

Kim Kardashian - Jay Shetty Podcast - YouTube

Kim Kardashian, the mother of four kids with Kanye West, has an issue with the education system. This week, she spoke out about her problem with children doing homework. Read on for more details.

Not Happy With Homework Load

The celebrity from Keeping Up with the Kardashians raises her four children, North West (12), Saint West (9), Chicago West (7), and Psalm West (5). She isn’t happy at all with the amount of homework her kids have. She’s not alone in that, as Danielle Busby sometimes mentions problems with it and her quintuplets.

E! News reported that Kim spoke out about it when she appeared on Kai Cenat’s Mafiathon 3 livestream. They cited the business entrepreneur and cast member of The Kardashians on Hulu as saying, “I don’t believe in homework.”

She added, “Kids are in school for eight hours a day. When they come home, they do sports, have a life, spend time with their family.” So, she believes that “homework should be left for in school.”

Is The Homework Load Different These Days?

Kim Kardashian is 44 years old, so in about 1992, she would have been the same age as North West is now. In the early 1990s, U.S. students had much less homework. Elementary kids averaged under 30 minutes a night, while high schoolers had less than two hours. Homework rarely took over a family’s evening.

Since the 2000s, federal policies and standardized testing led to more homework. Now, even young children work on nightly assignments. Notably, older students might spend hours on it. The increase allegedly links to higher stress, which is why critics like Kim believe homework seems too demanding.

She’s not alone. In 2013, The Atlantic ran an article by Karl Taro Greenfeld, who did his daughter’s middle school homework for a week. Titled My Daughter’s Homework Is Killing Me, he claimed that “she averages three to four hours of homework a night and six and a half hours of sleep.”

Fans Agree With The Celebrity?

When E! News shared their article on Instagram, some people agreed that Kim hit on something they agree with. One commentator said, “I’ve always said this. School work should be done at school.”

Another critic of the system wrote, “The homework children get is excessive. It’s a source of stress for many of them. Read to your kids. Teach them vocabulary words, math skills. Only, teach them in real life scenarios. That’s how children learn.”

However, others disagreed that it’s too much, mostly because the demands of college require a lot of independent work. One person in favor of it said:

Homework helped me as a child and helps as a full-time, working adult in college. It helps you retain and apply what you learned in class and test yourself to see if you truly understood the material.

As a teacher, I think homework is very important. It should be a review of important skills learn throughout the day. However, it should not be additional hours of work… That is excessive! When students are doing homework, they are working independently without the help of their classmates or teachers, to test their understanding, memory, and skills. It also allows their parents to see what they are learning or struggling with on a daily basis. School is supposed to be a partnership between teachers and families. That one on one time at home allows students to ask more questions and practice skills learned. Parents can help reinforce skills for students who are struggling or help challenge students who are capable of more or have varied interests! Schools and families need to work together for the benefit of all children. Schools are already expected to discipline children, but cannot be expected to cover all of a student’s learning needs in an eight hour day with 25 students! Parenting is hard work. But that doesn’t mean that the responsibility should be completely put on the schools. We want your children to succeed as much as you do. We do our part, you do yours!
