Lady Gaga has opened up about her decision to not publicly deny rumors questioning her gender, revealing that she never considered herself a victim of such speculation.
During an appearance on Netflix’s What’s Next? The Future with Bill Gates, the Joker: Folie à Deux actress reflected on the rumors that surfaced early in her career. Rather than directly addressing these claims, she chose not to speak on them to avoid contributing to potential shame for others.
Gaga’s Response To Rumor Claiming She Was A Man
“When I was in my early 20s, there was a rumor that I was a man,” she said. Gaga recounted the worldwide travels she embarked on for her tours and promotional events.
Despite facing constant questioning, she chose to remain silent. “I went all over the world. I travelled for tours and for promoting my records and almost every interview I sat in – there was this imagery on the internet that had been doctored – they were like, ‘There’s rumours that you’re a man. What do you have to say about that?”
Instead of shutting down the rumors, Gaga adopted a unique approach. “The reason I didn’t answer the question,” Gaga said, back in her conversation with Gates, “was because I didn’t feel like a victim with that lie. But I thought about, like, what about a kid that’s being accused of that, that would think a public figure like me would feel shame.”
Gaga’s Perspective On Dealing With Rumors
The now 38-year-old singer also shared her perspective on dealing with falsehoods. “I’ve been in situations where fixing a rumour was not in the best interest of the well being of other people. In that case, I tried to be thought provoking and disruptive in another way. I tried to use the misinformation to create another disruptive point.”
Gaga, whose real name is Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, found some of the rumors amusing. “I’ve been used to lies being printed about me since I was 20 years old. I’m a performer. I think it’s kind of funny,” she said.
Her bold, unapologetic persona has often been reflected in her responses to rumors. In a memorable 2011 CNN interview with Anderson Cooper, she famously shrugged off gender speculation, stating: “Why the hell am I going to waste my time and give a press release about whether or not I have a penis? My fans don’t care and neither do I.”
Her support for the trans community and refusal to entertain speculation about her own gender identity has won her praise from fans. One fan took to Twitter (X) to share their admiration, writing, “Trans solidarity from the literal first steps of her career she is mother for real god I love you lady gaga,” while another shared: “Gaga has supported trans rights since the beginning. I will never stop being in love with this woman.”
