The ‘Joker’ sequel was as well-received as a road accident when it premiered last year. In fact, some fans said they would bleach their eyes without a second thought if it helped them rid their brains of the memory of watching the movie.
Others said they didn’t even stay for the whole thing – some were out as early as the third musical number. For me, I was lucky enough not to have watched it so I have no feelings – harsh or otherwise – towards it. But for the critics of the movie, Mama Monster has something to say.
Lady Gaga Says ‘Joker 2′ Hate Is Because Everybody Doesn’t Like the Same Things
It’s true, isn’t it? We don’t all like the same thing. Somebody could totally be vibing to Jenna Ortega’s ‘Wednesday’ and another person will come along and say it’s barf. And in that note I’d like to candidly disclose that I don’t see anything – anything at all – that anyone would love about Greta Gerwig’s ‘Barbie.’
The jokes don’t hit, the storyline isn’t emotional, and the themes just don’t connect. I didn’t even see any fashion statement to oogle. But it was a blockbuster regardless of my deep-seated dislike for it.
So, on that same note, Lady Gaga doesn’t think there’s anything wrong with ‘Joker 2’ – hold your objections to the very end – she just thinks people didn’t essentially “connect” with it.
“People just sometimes don’t like some things,” Gaga told Elle in an interview published Tuesday. ‘It’s that simple. And I think to be an artist, you have to be willing for people to sometimes not like it. And you keep going even if something didn’t connect in the way that you intended.” She then calls the fear of failure the most damaging thing to any creative project. “When that makes its way into your life, that can be hard to get control of. It’s part of the mayhem.”
The film isn’t only dragging itself down – it currently holds a 31% score on Rotten Tomatoes – it’s putting Lady Gaga’s offering as an actress into disrepute.
She was recently nominated for “worst actress” in the 2025 Razzie Awards. Apart from starring as Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker’s love interest Harley Quinn, Lady Gaga also served as the music consultant on the movie.
