Leonardo DiCaprio Almost Lost His Cast As Jack In “Titanic” Film — Here’s Why

The 1997 film Titanic was one of the greatest romance movies of its time. The film has gone on to win 11 Oscars since its release. I bet the movie wouldn’t have been this great if it weren’t for the main actors Leonardo DiCaprio (who starred as Jack), and Kate Winslet (who starred as Rose).

In the movie, Jack’s character won the hearts of many young girls and left them wishing he was theirs to have.

Now, nearly 24 years after the film’s release, it’s been revealed that the actor Leonardo DiCaprio who played the role of Jack the handsome artist who was in love with the beautiful Rose, a lady who’s way out of his league, nearly lost the cast as Jack.

Leonardo DiCaprio — How Leonardo Nearly Lost The Cast As Jack

On Tuesday, Nov. 22, James Cameron who was the director of Titanic revealed that Leo nearly lost the role of Jack because of his negative attitude on set.

According to James, Kate has already won the cast of Rose. When it was time for Leo to audition for Jack, he charmed every member of the crew on his first appearance.

James said that he asked Leo to return to do a chemistry reading with Kate to see how the two will connect for the Jack and Rose part. On Leo’s return, Leo had no idea what he was there for, unbeknownst to him, he thought he was invited to meet Kate and get familiar with her meanwhile he was invited for a chemistry reading.

“He came back a couple of days later, and I had the camera set up to record the video. He didn’t know he was going to test. He thought it was another meeting to meet Kate. So, I said, ‘OK, we’ll just go in the next room, and we’ll run some lines and I’ll video it.’”

When Leo learned why he was there, he displayed a negative attitude which nearly cost him the role. Leo said, “You mean, I’m reading? … Oh, I don’t read.” At that moment, James was ready to let Leo go so, James did the only thing that signals the end of every deal. James shook Leo’s hand and thanked him for coming.

Leonardo DiCaprio — Leonardo’s Reaction To Being Let Go

After James shook Leo’s hands and thanked him for coming, it downed on Leo that he was about to lose his cast so he asked James, “Wait, wait, wait. You mean, if I don’t read, I don’t get the part, just like that?”

And James replied, “Come on. This is a giant movie that is going to take two years of my life, and you’ll be gone doing five other things while I’m doing post-production,’” James recalled telling the Inception actor, “[I said,] ‘I’m not going to f—k it up by making the wrong decision in casting. So, you’re going to read, or you’re not going to get the part.’”

James revealed that Leo wasn’t happy with the whole thing and it was evident in his attitude. Everyone present in the room knew he was pissed. “He comes in, and … every ounce of his entire being is just so negative, right up until I said, ‘Action.’ Then he turned into Jack,” said the director of Avatar.

“Kate just lit up, and they played the scene. Dark clouds had opened up, and a ray of sun came down and lit up Jack. I’m like, ‘All right. He’s the guy.’” said the director of Avatar.
