Whatever experience we’re going through in life, whether it’s good or bad, there’s always something that we’ll likely end up taking away from it. However tangible it later becomes in your life is completely up to you.
For Macaulay Culkin, growing up with one abusive parent has made him conscious about the kind of father he wants to be for his kids.
Macaulay Culkin Says His Father’s Seven Kids and Four Grandkids Don’t Speak To Him
Macaulay Culkin had previously discussed growing up with an abusive father, and during his appearance on Kate and brother Oliver Hudson’s Sibling Revelry podcast’s latest episode, he further shed more light on this.
He recalled how his father Christopher “Kit” Culkin – a former stage actor – would physically and mentally abuse him as a child.
“He’s a man who had seven kids and now has four grandkids, and none of them want anything to do with him,” Culkin said of his father, who he hasn’t spoken to in 30 years.
He further noted that if the roles were reversed and he was the one whom multiple family members weren’t talking to, he would think “I must have done something wrong.”
“I have more than an inkling that he does not feel that way,” the former child star, who shares two children with Brenda Song, added. “Like we’re wrong and he’s right. He’s one of those narcissistic people.”
Macaulay Culkin Says He Once Dared A Lawyer To Arrest Him Over Family Issues
While Culkin still has a relationship with his mother Patricia Brentrup, the custody battle that ensued during his parents’ divorce took a toll on the then-young ‘Home Alone’ actor.
“I wanted nothing to do with my father,” Culkin simply said. “He was just the worst. The judge was like, well, you have to do visitations with him. I told my lawyer, ‘Yeah, I’m not doing that.’ He said, ‘Well, you’ll be in contempt of court’ and this and that.”
He was so against the thought of staying over at his dad’s place that he went “smart ass” on his lawyer. He recalled saying, “Well, how about this? I dare the judge to put me in jail for not wanting to visit his abusive father.’ I actually had to double down on that. ‘I double dare him to arrest the most famous kid in the world.’ I never played that card, but that was the one time I played that card.”
At present, as far as Culkin knows, none of his six siblings have any communication with him, even though some have tried in the past.
