Madonna has once again stirred controversy, this time by sharing AI-generated images of herself with Pope Francis.
The 66-year-old music icon, known for her boundary-pushing persona, posted the images created by digital artist Rick Dick on her Instagram story last Friday, December 13.
More Details Of The Image And Backlash
In one image, Madonna, clad in a black lace dress, is depicted with the Pope holding her arm and pressing his nose against her cheek. She captioned it, “Going into the weekend like… … …”
Another image shows her in a black bustier as Pope Francis wraps his arm around her waist, accompanied by the caption, “Feels good to be seen.”
Rick Dick also shared the images on his Instagram account, captioning them, “MA.I.DONNA AND THE POPE. Thank you @madonna ❤️.”
However, the posts quickly drew backlash. One commenter called it “ridiculously disrespectful,” while another implored, “Do not post things that offend God and the faith of millions of people, have more respect, do not repost lies, and do not create lies with artificial intelligence.” Others labeled the images “creepy,” “disgusting,” and “a useless use of modern tools.”
Madonna’s Complex History With Catholicism
Madonna’s relationship with Catholicism has long been a focal point of her public and artistic life. Growing up in a devout Catholic household in Michigan, she was immersed in religious practices such as Sunday Mass and rosary prayers.
However, as her career unfolded, she began using religious symbols in provocative ways to challenge traditional norms surrounding faith, sexuality, and identity.
Her 1989 music video for “Like a Prayer,” which featured imagery such as burning crosses and the seduction of a saint, sparked protests from religious groups.
MTV eventually dropped the full-length video, and a Pepsi ad featuring the song was banned. Similarly, her 1990 “Blonde Ambition” tour faced boycotts from Pope John Paul II.

In a 2013 interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Madonna reflected on her relationship with religion, saying, “I have a funny relationship with religion. I’m a big believer in ritualistic behaviour as long as it doesn’t hurt anybody. But I’m not a big fan of rules. And yet we cannot live in a world without order. But for me, there is a difference between rules and order.”
She added, “Yes, I like to provoke; it’s in my DNA. But nine times out of 10, there’s a reason for it.”
Speaking to Vanity Fair Italia in 2023, she elaborated on her spiritual beliefs: “My relationship with religion today? Cultivating my spiritual practices. Practices that are valid for me and do not necessarily have to be valid for everyone. I think everyone should do it because I find it important to pray and have a connection with the soul, with spiritual strength, call it what you want. I think it is important because I believe in the idea of something bigger, something higher, something metaphysical that is beyond us but that keeps us all together.”
A Divisive Legacy
Madonna’s use of religious imagery continues to evoke strong reactions, blending art and controversy in ways few can replicate. Whether seen as a bold statement or a step too far, her recent posts reignite discussions on the intersections of faith, technology, and creative freedom.
