Details Of The Documentary

The film, directed by Academy Award-winner Kevin Macdonald (One Day in September), delves into the couple’s life during the early 1970s when they resided in New York City’s Greenwich Village.

It features rare, never-before-seen footage and newly restored material from Lennon’s only full-length post-Beatles concert. This audio restoration was overseen by their son, Sean Ono Lennon.

The documentary had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival, followed by screenings at the Telluride Film Festival, and is set to be featured in the Spotlight section of the Sundance Film Festival, which runs from January 23 to February 2, 2025.

Magnolia plans an exclusive Imax release on April 11, 2025, with subsequent availability on HBO and Max later in the year.

Macdonald shared his enthusiasm for the project, stating:

“I am personally thrilled to be back with the Magnolia and HBO teams to be giving One to One: John & Yoko the ambitious theatrical release that I always dreamed of for this film. This is a movie about music and love and politics — and about immersing yourself in the year of 1972 — a period in time that feels uncannily like the world we are currently inhabiting. And more than anything else I’m grateful to Sean Lennon and Mercury Studios for entrusting the incredible One to One concert to me.”

The film uses the couple’s One to One benefit concert at Madison Square Garden on August 30, 1972, as a focal point to explore their lives and activism during this transformative time.

Inspired by a Geraldo Rivera exposé they watched on television, the concert highlighted their evolving approach to protest and social advocacy.

Describing the documentary, Magnolia Pictures’ co-CEOs Eamonn Bowles and Dori Begley remarked:

“One to One: John & Yoko is a revelation. Kevin Macdonald has given us an incredibly fresh, marvelously human, and revealing look at the iconic couple.”
