Malia Obama Doesn’t Want To Be A Nepo Baby, Drops Her Family Last Name

Malia Obama is not looking forward to making it in Hollywood on the strength of her last name. Instead, she wants to use her talent to drive her success. See the name she wants to be known as in Hollywood circles.

Malia Obama Distances Herself From Famous Parents As Hollywood Career Heats Up

Being the daughter of a former US president Barack Obama can’t be easy, and with the nepo baby conversations going around these days, hardly anyone can blame Malia for wanting to brand herself away from her powerful parents.

Apart from being the former president and first lady of the US, Barack and Michelle Obama are both bestselling authors, and they’ve got several other successful business ventures.

Malia Obama Wants A Hollywood Career, Distances Herself From Parents

As an upcomer in the world of entertainment, Malia wants to make it on her own steam, rather than on the last name she’s bearing (I know, don’t people wish Prince Harry would take a cue and drop the title from his name?)

It was, however, surprising to fans to find Sundance Institute’s “Meet the Artist” spotlight video introduce Malia’s pen name as Malia Ann. In case you don’t know where the Ann is coming from, it’s her middle name.

Despite being big in the movie industry themselves, Barack and Michelle Obama were no show at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, which took place earlier this month, and where their eldest daughter Malia, 25, made her red carpet debut for the premiere of “The Heart.”

Describing the project in her Sundance spotlight, she called it “an odd little story, somewhat of fable, about a man grieving the death of his mother after she leaves him an unusual request in her will.”

While the Donald Glover-produced movie was Malia’s first time directing, she’d already had some writing experience under her belt as a staff writer on his Amazon Prime show “Swarm.”

“She’s a very professional person,” “Swarm’s” co-creator Janine Nabers said of Malia in a January 2023 Vanity Fair interview, adding, “She’s an incredible writer and artist.”

Glover also echoed the Harvard Grad’s praise in a March 2022 Vanity Fair interview. “I feel like she’s just somebody who’s gonna have really good things coming soon,” he said. “Her writing style is great. We can’t be easy on her just because she’s the [former] President’s daughter.”
