Mariah Carey Says She Didn’t Have Freedom During The Earlier Years Of Her Music Career

Yes, Mariah Carey is one of the bestselling singers of our generation, so it’s hard to imagine her towing the line like other up-and-coming artists usually have to. It’s easy to forget that before “All I Want For Christmas Is You” crowned her as the Queen of Christmas and before “We Belong Together” cemented her among the greats of her genre, she was struggling like everybody else to make her voice heard.

Not that it was a hard job on her part because her voice is something we all want to hear, not withholding even the blessed whistle register she uses so elegantly.

But before she could be able to pick her projects and control the music she puts out into the world, she once had to listen to people who controlled and perfected her craft.

Mariah Carey Shares That Making An Alternative Rock Album Was Her Way Of Being Rebellious

Singers are often typecast because of the presumption that their fans will only support and love their music when it sounds “like the artist”.

Taylor Swift, before taking over the pop world by storm, said that her record label were reluctant to have her switching genres from country to pop. But she’s Taylor Swift, after all. Swift admitted that the shift was scary, but let’s be honest, she’s a rare success story when it comes to artists switching from “their original sound”.

Mariah Carey, during her earlier years, was known for her songs that were prominently R&B influenced.

Whilst talking about privately making a grunge album in 1995, she said that defying her genre and her sound was her refuge from the constant need to sound a certain way.

“I had no freedom during that time. That was my freedom,” she said. “I would drive around with my assistant with the top down in upstate New York, and we’d be screaming the lyrics of these songs that nobody else knew.”

She continued, “It was my release, and it was just fun. Literally, I started out, ‘Oh, this is just for laughs. We’re having fun,’ but then I was like, ‘No, this is me screaming. This is literally what I’m going through.'”

This is coming after she finally declared to the world that she had actually written, performed and produced an alternative rock album over 25 years ago.

She also shared that she found her original recordings and is now looking forward to releasing it to the world.
