Marilyn Monroe’s life may be bumpy and like a rollercoaster, but her estate believes that Armas’ portrayal of Marilyn’s humane and vulnerable side catches the late star’s true essence.

Marc Rosen – Praises “Blonde’s” Trailer For Casting “Brilliant” Ana de Armas

On Monday, Marc Rosen — president of entertainment for Authentic Brands Group (ABG), which owns the Marilyn Monroe Estate — issued a statement to Variety, acknowledging Marilyn’s role as “a singular Hollywood and pop culture icon that transcends generations and history.”

“Any actor that steps into that role knows they have big shoes to fill,” Rosen continued. “Based on the trailer alone, it looks like Ana was a great casting choice as she captures Marilyn’s glamour, humanity and vulnerability. We can’t wait to see the film in its entirety!”

According to an official synopsis, the movie “boldly reimagines the life of Marilyn Monroe, exploring the split between her public and private selves.” Ana de Armas, 34, is playing the lead role as Marilyn Monroe (born Norma Jeane Baker).

What We Know About “Blonde” So Far

On Thursday, Netflix released an official trailer for the movie, which will be based on the 2000 novel by Joyce Carol Oates. “Blonde” has earned an NC-17 rating.

In the 2 minutes plus trailer, de Armas’ Monroe struggles with the dark side of fame and crumbles even as she is at the peak of her success. The movie’s dramatic events unfolded to a rendition of the 1950 star’s “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend” plays in the background.

“I know you’re supposed to get used to it, but I just can’t,” de Armas’ Monroe moans in the trailer, before later adding that she’s no longer capable of facing “another scene with Marilyn Monroe.”
“When I come out of my dressing room, I’m Norma Jeane. I’m still her when the camera is rolling,” she adds. “Marilyn Monroe only exists on the screen.”

The film’s cast includes Bobby Cannavale, Adrien Brody, Julianne Nicholson, Xavier Samuel and Evan Williams.

Brody, who plays Monroe’s ex-husband Arthur Miller in the film, said that de Armas was rightfully picked for the role during an interview with Deadline.

“There will be some controversy with that one, I’m sure,” Brody, 49, told host Pete Hammond with a laugh.

Echoing Brody’s proclamation that the film will cause “some controversy”, writer/director Andrew Dominik revealed that the film will in fact “offend everyone”. “It’s a film that definitely has a morality about it. But it swims in very ambiguous waters because I don’t think it will be as cut-and-dried as people want to see it. There’s something in it to offend everyone,” he told Vulture earlier this year.

The movie will be released on Netflix come September 23.
