Matthew Perry – Shares His Expensive Journey To Being Sober

Alcohol and substance addiction is no laughing matter and can sometimes put a strain on friends and families and make them distance themselves. But not Perry’s “Friends” co-stars. After spending over a decade filming “Friends” and reuniting for a “Friends’” reunion in between, Perry and his costars are as cool offscreen as they are onscreen.
He called them “understanding” and “patient”.

As for the amount of money he spent to finally achieve his goal of sobriety, Perry estimates it could run in excess of $9 million in his book “Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing”.

The actor also shared a happy news that he’s been sober for 18 months, which means he’d already been a few months sober by the time the 2021 “Friends” reunion special was filmed.

In a prior interview with PEOPLE, the actor admitted that gaining sobriety is the best thing that could happen to anyone who is addicted to alcohol and drugs, saying that it was everything.

“Because if you don’t have sobriety, you’re going to lose everything that you put in front of it, so my sobriety is right up there,” Perry said. “I’m an extremely grateful guy. I’m grateful to be alive, that’s for sure. And that gives me the possibility to do anything.”

He decided to seek hardcore rehabilitation the time he had a near-death experience after his colon burst. This resulted in a five-month hospitilization and a colostomy bag.

“My therapist said, ‘The next time you think about taking OxyContin, just think about having a colostomy bag for the rest of your life,'” he explained. “And a little window opened, and I crawled through it, and I no longer want OxyContin.”

Perry, who is best known for playing Chandler Bing on the U.S. sitcom “Friends”, credited his costars on the show – Jennifer Aniston, David Schwimmer, Matt Leblanc and Lisa Kudrow – as kind and caring people. At the time the show was rounding up, he was already taking 55 Vicodin a day and weighed 128 pounds.

“They were understanding, and they were patient,” Perry said. “It’s like penguins. In nature, when one is sick or very injured, the other penguins surround it and prop it up and walk around until that penguin can walk on its own. And that’s kind of what the cast did for me.”

Perry’s memoir Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing will be available Nov. 1.
