Matthew Perry’s Memoir Is the Stuff Nightmares Are Made Of

Fame is often not fair on the famous. As Maroon 5 ‘s Adam Levine once sang, “fame is a lie”. There’s been only a few who were able to navigate the dazzling lights of the entertainment industry and come out unscathed – these few may or may not even exist – but for so many, their time in the spotlight has meant entering into the world of substance abuse.

There’s been some horror stories from stars in the past, for example, Hayden Panettiere’s story of being given drugs at a very young age is chilling, but Matthew Perry may just be on the list of one of the most terrifying. Yes, Eminem, Demi Lovato, and many others have got their own shocking moments too.

At the meantime, I’m strictly on the Matthew Perry sympathy wagon, and I bet you will be too, once you dive into his memoir, “Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing”. Let’s take a look at some of the most shocking revelations.

Matthew Perry’s New Memoir Explores High Profile Romances And A Near-death Experience

Matthew Perry’s memoir is filled with solid jaw-dropping moments and insights into his horrible high profile romances, like the date with Cameron Diaz that went wrong and that one time he proposed to someone when he was high. Let’s also not forget the part where he detailed having sex with Gwyneth Paltrow in a closet.

Matthew Perry's Memoir Is the Stuff Nightmares Are Made Of

At the tender age of 14, Matthew Perry drank his first bottle of alcohol. At age 49, he almost died from overusing prescription opioids. “The doctors told my family that I had a two-percent chance to live. That’s the time I really came close to my life ending,” he said about the horrifying experience when his colon ruptured as a result of high intake of Oxytocin. He was in coma for two weeks and when he woke up, he had to use a colostomy bag for over a year.

Back to his younger years, he admitted that the alcohol usage started getting worse when he was in highschool and started acting. “Acting was another one of my drugs,” he writes. “And it didn’t do the damage that alcohol was already starting to do. In fact, it was getting harder and harder to wake up after a night of drinking.”

Matthew Perry – And His High-profile Relationships

At age 18, Perry, lost his virginity to Tricia Leigh Fisher, the half-sister of the late Carrie Fisher.
While filming “Sydney”, he fell “madly in love” with his costar Valerie Bertinelli, who was married to Eddie Van Halen at the time. He went further as to detail one night when he was at the couple’s house and made out with Bertinelli while Van Halen was passed out from drinking.

He also admitted having a wild crush on his “Friends” costar Jennifer Aniston, before they began filming the hit sitcom and while it was filming.

In November, 2020, he asked girlfriend Molly Hurwitz to marry him when he was high. Among his many dalliances was one where he had sex in a broom cupboard during a party in Williamstown, Massachusetts with “Iron Woman” Gwyneth Paltrow.

He also had a strangely poetic romance with Julia Roberts, and revealed that the only reason Roberts agreed to appear on “Friends” was because of him.
