Melissa Etheridge Knows Its Not Her Fault Son Joined The Thousands Of Young People Who Died From Addiction

Melissa Etheridge’s son Beckett died at the age of 21 from Opioid addiction in 2020. It was a very sad time for the family, but two years on, Etheridge has fought her way through the wilderness of sorrow to acknowledge that she shouldn’t feel guilty for what happened.

She tried her best as any mother would and she’s hanging onto the truth of it.

Melissa Etheridge Says “Having A Spiritual Belief” Helped Her Move On From Son’s Tragic Death

Melissa opened up to Page Six at the beginning of her off-Broadway show, “My Window”, about where she is mentally following the death of her son. She said she now understands that everyone makes their own choices and she shouldn’t kill herself over her son’s.

“We can all choose every day, whether it’s love or fear, and my son made his choices and I did the best I could as a mom and I’m not going to take any guilt or shame,” the singer told Page Six exclusively. “He wouldn’t want me to stop and ruin my life because of his choices.”

What Melissa Etheridge Has Said In the Past About Her Young Son’s Death

In May 2020, the “I’m the Only One” singer shared a heartbreaking news on social media that her son Beckett lost his fight with addiction at age 2020.

“Today I joined the hundreds of thousands of families who have lost loved ones to opioid addiction,” she tweeted. “My son Beckett, who was just 21, struggled to overcome his addiction and finally succumbed to it today.

“He will be missed by those who loved him, his family and friends. My heart is broken. I am grateful for those who have reached out with condolences and I Feel their love and sincere grief,” the note continued.

“We struggled with what else we could have done to save him and in the end we know he is out of the pain now.”

“I will sing again, soon,” Etheridge’s note concluded. “It has always healed me.”
