In 2020, Michael J. Fox announced that he’s stepping back from acting due to the progression of his Parkinson’s disease. However, three years later, he says he’s open to the idea of returning, but under this one condition.
Michael J. Fox Would Love To Return To Acting To Portray His “Challenges”
It’s possible Michael J. Fox’s run as an actor is not yet over, not when the right story could come to him in the right circumstances.
The “Back to the Future” star opened up about what could drag him out of his retirement in an April 5 interview with Entertainment Tonight.
“I would do acting if something came up that I could put my realities into it, my challenges,” he said, adding, “if I could figure it out.”
The star did reveal that his greatest win in life is having to have shared his life with wife Tracy Pollan and the children, Sam Michael Fox, 34, Aquinnah Kathleen Fox, 29, Esmé Annabelle Fox, 29, and Schuyler Frances Fox, 22, they share together.
“My biggest goal, I think, was to raise a family,” the 62-year-old explained. “We have four amazing kids, and that’s been the big thing.”
Apart from acting and family, Michael is also deeply invested in the philanthropic works he carries out through his foundation, the Michael J. Fox Foundation.
He created the foundation in 2000 to fund the cure of Parkinson’s disease, a progressive disorder that is said to affect the nervous system and the parts of the body controlled by the nervous system.
The star was diagnosed with the condition in 1991. Since then, he’s been pretty open about his experiences and the hurdles the condition present him with everyday.
“I’ve won more awards and had more nominations since I announced my diagnosis,” Michael told Variety in an interview published in May 2023. “It may be that people feel bad for me, but I prefer to look at it as an acknowledgment for continuing to have a legitimate career.”
However, he did admit that no matter how hard he tries to rationalize living with the disease, it still doesn’t make coping with it any easier. “But no matter how much I sit here and talk to you about how I’ve philosophically accepted it and taken its weight, Parkinson’s is still kicking my ass,” he said at the time.
“I won’t win at this. I will lose,” Michael continued. “But, there’s plenty to be gained in the loss.”
