Yeesh, Michael Shannon’s reaction to “Star Wars” is dividing fans right now. Imagine not finding a “Star Wars” movie “stimulating!” To Shannon, all the pew-pews and pow-wows the world, and imagination, can offer is not enough to make the franchise anything other than “mindless” to him.

Here’s what he has to say about “Star Wars,” and fair warning, if you’re a true nerd, you may want to take a seat before reading on.

Michael Shannon Says The World Doesn’t Need More Mindless Entertainment After Revealing He Turned Down A “Star Wars” Role

In a recent interview with Empire Magazine, the star – known for such roles as “Bullet Train,” “The Flash,” and “The Iceman” – revealed that he once turned down a “Star Wars” role because he didn’t want to be involved in mindless entertainment.

Shannon started off by revealing that major franchise films “take a lot of time and I don’t find them very stimulating to work on,” before going on to declare that he did turn down a role in “Star Wars.”

While he did not reveal which movie in the franchise he was referring to, he confessed that “I don’t ever want to get stuck in a franchise.”

“I don’t find them interesting and I don’t want to perpetuate them,” he said of franchise films. “If I’m making something, I want there to be some kind of purpose to it — I don’t want to make mindless entertainment.”

“The world doesn’t need more mindless entertainment,” he added. “We’re inundated with it.”

Shannon received critical acclaim for returning as general Zod – a role he first played in 2013’s “Man of Steel” – in Ezra Miller’s “The Flash.”

In the interview, he noted that it was relevant to the DC universe that Zod was included in the latest “The Flash” movie, even though he was originally meant to play the character once.

While the rest of us might have our own opinion on Zod, Shannon doesn’t think the villain is as ruthless as he seems.

“When you hear that hypothetically if we destroy the Earth, we might go live on Mars — it’s the same thing. I didn’t look at Zod as a villain,” the actor said. “I just saw him as a guy whose job is to protect his people.”
