Modern Family’s Sarah Hyland Joins Cast of Epic, An ABC Fairytale Drama Pilot

After leaving the Modern Family nest, Sarah Hyland is finally returning to ABC for the cast of fairytale drama pilot Epic, from Once Upon a Time creators Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis. The actress joined the cast for the series described as a romantic anthology “that reinvents fairy tales for a new audience.”

Hyland will be taking the spot as Rose, a princess who’s about to marry her Prince Charming. However, her fairytale gets upended when he begins to contemplate his decision about marriage. Unfortunately, trying to preserve her dreams opens her up to an unexpected world.

About the Cast Members

The fairytale drama cast is led by Brittany O’Grady (Little Voice), who plays cynical princess Luna, and Eleanor Fanyinka (Holby City), who plays a mysterious character known as The Seer. The drama was written by former Once Upon a Time writer Brigitte Hales, who executively produced the movie alongside Horowitz, Kitsis, and Griffiths. James Griffiths is directing the pilot, which is still in development and is not in consideration for ABC’s fall 2021 slate.

Hyland recently wrapped up an 11-season run as the eldest child of the Dunphy family, Haley Dunphy on ABC’s Modern Family. The series ended with an Emmy-winning run last year. She also starred and executively produced a romantic comedy, The Wedding Year. Hyland currently hosts and executive produces Lady Parts with Sarah Hyland on EllenTube. Her other TV credits include Shadowhunters, Hulu’s Veronica Mars revival, and ABC’s 2017 movie musical version of Dirty Dancing.

Sarah Hyland, originally known as Sarah Jane Hyland is an American actress and singer born November 24, 1990, to actors Melissa Canaday and Edward James Hyland. Sarah spent her early years in Manhattan, New York where she attended the Professional Performing Arts School and earned small roles in the films Private Parts (1997), Annie (1999), and Blind Date (2007). She became a spotlight actress for playing Haley Dunphy in the ABC sitcom Modern Family (2009–2020), for which she received numerous appraisals, including four Screen Actors Guild Awards for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series, and a Critics’ Choice Television Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.

Sarah Hyland’s Career

Interestingly, Sarah has been advancing in her acting career since her first role as Howard Stern’s daughter in the film Private Parts in 1997. She went on to take on roles, for which she played as Molly in the 1999 television film of Annie and Maddie Healy in Lipstick Jungle on NBC. Hyland was featured in an Olive Garden commercial along with actress Molly Culver and has also appeared on Broadway as the young Jacqueline Bouvier in Grey Gardens (2006).

From 2009 to 2020, Hyland interpreted her role perfectly as Haley Dunphy on the ABC sitcom Modern Family, for which she and the rest of the show’s cast won the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series each year from 2011 through 2014. In 2011, Hyland co-starred in the Disney Channel Original Movie Geek Charming. In 2012, Hyland appeared in the film Struck by Lightning. In September 2012, she was involved in a Nintendo 3DS ad campaign along with Dianna Agron and Gabby Douglas.
