Natalie Portman, 43, had fond recollections to share of her role in the popular children’s animated series Bluey. Portman chatted with Today on July 15 to promote her upcoming Apple TV+ miniseries, Lady in the Lake.
Host Hoda Kotb was surprised to learn that Bluey was one of Portman’s credits. In reply, Portman said that she considers her cameo in the show’s third season episode, “Whale Watching,” to be one of her “most important” roles.
Natalie Portman Says Bluey is Perfect For Family
“I was a narrator of a nature documentary that they were watching,” Portman explained. “It’s a very important show for my family and I was really, really honored to get to be part of it.”
Portman, who has two children, a son Aleph, 13, and daughter Amalia, 7, with her ex-husband, Benjamin Millepied, concluded, “It’s so wonderful. It’s pure joy.”
The show, created by the Australian animator Joe Brumm, began airing in 2018 and centers on the career of a Blue Heeler puppy, Bluey, and her family.
Kelly Lawler, a TV critic at USA TODAY, commended the program for capturing “the spirit of play, the reality of parenting, and the beauty of childhood all in crisp, seven-minute episodes.”
Portman’s cameo points to Bluey’s place in the hearts of families worldwide. “It’s just pure joy,” Portman said of the series, echoing Kotb’s sentiment that “Bluey is such a hit in our house, too.”
In the episode ‘Whale Watching’, Portman voiced a character named the ‘Whale Doco Narrator.’
When Bluey and Bingo are watching a whale documentary on TV and engaging in a pretend play with their dad – who lies on the floor pretending he is a whale – Portman’s character narrates, “Whales travel extremely long distances into warm waters to have their babies. They stay with them all the way back to the colder waters. There’s nothing a whale mom wouldn’t do for her children.” The kids’ mum also joins in on the fun.
Portman’s Celebrations and Upcoming Projects
Portman was one of several stars who guest-starred on Bluey, including Eva Mendes, Rose Byrne, and Robert Irwin. Her 43rd birthday was marked by an Instagram post she wrote on June 10 honoring her friends for their support.
The post read, “This year, on my birthday, I want to celebrate my gratitude for my friends who lift me up again and again.”
Additionally, Portman is publicizing her new series Lady in the Lake, which premieres on Apple TV+ on 19 July with new installments released every Friday through to 12 August; and last year she appeared opposite Julianne Moore in the romantic thriller May December, directed by Todd Haynes.
Bluey remains a delight to watch for the same reasons, and Portman says the show will always be a highlight of her life.
