Nicholas Hoult – On Auditioning For Different Roles Before Landing The Villain In “Mission: Impossible”

“Mission Impossible” is the movie most stars dream to have in their credits, and who wouldn’t with the global fascination surrounding each of the projects. The Tom Cruise-led spy thriller has continued to wow audiences for over two decades.

There was once a time when Hoult was tapped to play the villain alongside Tom Cruise’s protagonist, Ethan Hunt, and while the thought of it excited him greatly, other commitments meant he had to eventually drop it.

Speaking to The Guardian on Friday, April 14, Hoult finally addressed the reason he isn’t going to appear on “Mission: Impossible 7” as widely reported in 2020.

Excitement about the star’s involvement in the project first ignited when Director Christopher McQuarrie shared an Instagram post asking Hoult whether he cared “to raise a little hell?” To seal the deal, Hoult responded, “Though why stop at a little?”

Unfortunately, this dream role wasn’t going to come to fruition due to a scheduling conflict with Hulu’s “The Great,” another project he’d already signed on.

“I screen-tested for Batman and didn’t get it. Screen-tested for Top Gun, didn’t get it. Then I got the call from Tom Cruise: ‘Hey, how about Mission Impossible?’ OK. Got it. Then I had to drop out because I was already attached to do some more of The Great,” Hoult told The Guardian.

At around the same time, Hoult also auditioned for the role of Batman in Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” and even made it to the final casting round, alongside “Twilight’s” Robert Pattinson. Ultimately, the role would go to Pattinson, whose work as the caped vigilante received critical acclaim.

Hoult also auditioned for an unknown role in “Top Gun: Maverick,” which later went on to break box office records when it premiered in 2022. Directed by Joe Kosinski, the movie stars Miles Teller and Glen Powell among others.

For all Hoult fans out there, you can still see him on the big screen alongside Nicolas Cage in Universal’s horror comedy “Renfield.” His other upcoming projects include Robert Eggers’ “Nosferatu” and Clint Eastwood’s “Juror No. 2.”
