Even then, he understands that not everybody can share the same positive experiences he gained filming and being a part of such a beloved franchise that hooked fans for near two decades.
Here’s what he has to say about his co-star and onscreen lover Keira Knightley’s reaction to the franchise’s negative impact on her life.
Keira Knightley Opens Up About the Impact Disney’s ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ Had On Her Life and Career
Late last year, Keira Knightley candidly talked about the impact of the ‘Pirates’ franchise on her life. She didn’t have a straight-up negative experience from it, no, but it wasn’t all cherries either.
Starting in 2003, Knightley played Elizabeth Swann, alongside Orlando Bloom (Will Turner) and Johnny Depp (Captain Jack Sparrow).
She appeared as a main character in the first three movies, didn’t make any appearance in ‘On Stanger Tides’ and only had a minimal part to play in 2017’s ‘Dead Men Tell No Tales.”

Still, considering she was 17 at the time she gained profound fame, you can understand how that would work to make her just a tad uncomfortable. For one, all the body-shaming and eating disorder rumors did nothing to help her mental health.
“It’s a funny thing when you have something that was making and breaking you at the same time. I was seen as shit because of them, and yet because they did so well I was given the opportunity to do the films that I ended up getting Oscar nominations for,” she told The Times last November.
“They were the most successful films I’ll ever be a part of and they were the reason that I was taken down publicly. So they’re a very confused place in my head,” she continued.
She went on to clarify that she would not be returning for any more movies in the franchise. “The hours are insane. It’s years of your life, you have no control over where you’re filming, how long you’re filming, what you’re filming,” she shared.

In a recent chat with Entertainment Weekly, Orlando shared his own takeaways from the franchise and why he understands Knightley’s feelings.
“It was such a huge moment in time that is almost like… it feels almost like another lifetime now,” he began.
“But it certainly was unique and, you know, I’m always grateful. But I definitely understand where Keira was coming from, and she does wonderful things.… I have a lot of positive takeaways,” he added.
As for returning to the franchise, Bloom is definitely not against the idea. “Listen, it was a wild and fun experience so, you know, never say never,” he said. “I have a lot of respect for that experience, and Jerry, and the whole thing. But who knows? I mean, it’s sort of one of those things I really haven’t thought about it, really.”
Reports state two different ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ projects are currently under development.
