Did you know that for Paul Rudd to rock that Ant-Man suit a lot of work had to be done first? “With great power comes great responsibility” has never seemed more sensible until now.
Paul Rudd Details Intense Dieting He Went Through To Shoot the Ant-Man Movies
Have you ever wondered what it’ll be like to play a superhero in a Marvel or DC movie? Well, wonder no more because Paul Rudd just gave us the lowdown.
In a recent chat with Off Menu podcast – a place for guests to talk about their “dream menu” – hosts Ed Gamble and James Acaster asked the star about the kind of water he preferred.
“When I was having to train for the Ant-Man movie, and I was on a very restrictive diet, my reward was sparkling water,” he responded, laughing. “That’s how horrible that diet was. I was like, ‘Alright, I’m gonna have some sparkling water now, I’ve earned it.’”
Surprised, Acaster inquired into what kind of diet he had to be doing for water to be his treat, and he replied, “Yeah, it was great. It wasn’t flavored, I wasn’t gonna go crazy.”
The 54-year-old then went on to add that once you committed, it’s easier to stick to the path.
“Once you’re in it, it’s actually not too hard,” he said, adding that he didn’t mind having “really boring food, every time, over and over again.” While the dieting wasn’t exactly exciting, there was a reward for it because it meant he usually woke up with “tons of energy.”
Rudd actually isn’t the first Marvel star to open up about the intensive training he underwent for his role, as Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Allen White, Channing Tatum, Robert Pattinson, among others have shared with fans the secrets to getting and maintaining their superhero core.
Paul Rudd Says He Worked Harder Than Everyone Else and Ends Up Worse Than Everyone
When the hosts asked him whether there was a way for him and his fellow Marvel co-stars to compare notes on their training, he replied that they sometimes do.
“I mean, I think people kind of are,” he said. “But I also think I worked out harder than anyone, I would eat better than everyone, and I looked worse than all of them. I had to work out all the time, eat perfectly, just to look kind of bad. Not even like great.”
The “Only Mothers in the Building” then complained that seeing Chris Hemsworth’s perfect “Almighty Thor” body always left him feeling dejected.
“I remember on Endgame, Chris Hemsworth would always have these Tupperware containers and he’s eating this gruel of just a mash of stuff,” he described. “He’s working out, and then you stand next to a guy like that, and I just think, ‘Well, what’s the point of any of this?’ Why am I killing myself when that can exist, and then I look at myself and this exists. I can never achieve that. … That was the good thing that it was Ant-Man, it isn’t Thor. But I tried to work out, and it didn’t work.”
