Pete Davidson just broke SNL fans’ hearts. After seven whole seasons with the show, Pete is finally ready to hang his boots. Pete Davidson joined the SNL team when the show was in its season 40 in 2014, when he was 20 years old, he was a relative unknown and one of the show’s youngest cast members ever. the now 28-year-old has become one of the most famous comedians on the planet.
In the past, Pete has said something about leaving the show and in May 2021, he sparked exit rumors in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, saying, “I’m surprised I made it to seven seasons. I’m ready to hang up the jersey.”
Pete Davidson — Other Shows Pete Has Headlined
Pete is probably best known for his winking standup bits on SNL’s Weekend Update, tackling topics from mental health and sobriety to his childhood on Staten Island. He’s also known for the recurring character Chad, and he’s headlined many of the show’s catchiest music video parodies, including “Tucci Gang,” “Walking in Staten,” and “NFTs.” (His rap sketch with Timothée Chalamet is a particular highlight.)
Outside of 30 Rock, Davidson has also starred in films like The Suicide Squad and The King of Staten Island. Up next, he’ll appear in the A24 horror movie Bodies Bodies Bodies (out Aug. 5), and he’s also starring in Peacock’s half-hour comedy series Bupkis, which is loosely inspired by his own life.
Davidson already has his next project lined up; he’s set to write, star and executive produce Bupkis, a live-action, half-hour comedy that will be “a heightened, fictionalized version” of his real life.
Pete Davidson — Pete’s Emotional Goodbye Message To Fans “I’m So Happy And Sad”
Yesterday May 21, Pete Davidson shared a goodbye message confirming that the show’s season 47 finale will be his last episode as an SNL cast member.
In a statement via the Instagram account of SNL and King of Staten Island writer Dave Sirus, alongside a video of Davidson still clad in a purple football jersey from an NFL on CBS sketch during his very first episode, hugging comic Jerrod Carmichael.
“This video was taken 8 years ago. Jerrod sent it to me last night and it made me super emotional in the best way. In the video I had just gotten back from doing my very first update and sketch. It’s crazy to think that today I’ll be doing my last one. When I got the show I was 20 years old and I had no idea what I was doing. I still don’t but especially back then. I wasn’t really a sketch performer I was just a stand up. I knew I could never keep up or go toe to toe with a Kenan Thompson or a Kate McKinnon so I was super scared at figuring out what I could possibly bring to or do for such a historic, respected show and platform.

I figured since I’m a stand up I’ll just try my stand-up and personal bits on Weekend Update as myself and I’m so glad I did. I got to share so much with this audience and literally grow up in front of your eyes. We were together through the good and the bad, the happiest and the darkest of times. I owe Lorne Michaels and everyone at SNL my life. I’m so grateful and I wouldn’t be here without them. I appreciate you guys always having my back and sticking up for me even when that wasn’t the popular opinion. Thank you for always believing in me and sticking by my side even when it seemed comical. Thank you for teaching me life values, how to grow up and for giving me memories that will last a lifetime. SNL is my home. I’m so happy and sad about tonight’s show. For so many reasons I can’t explain. Can’t wait to be back next year in a Mulaney musical number.
