If someone told you that Pink has gone through several identities before becoming Pink – that is, the musician we all know and love, would you believe?
Well, the star sat down for an indepth chat with PEOPLE and touched on her childhood days. Shall we say pre-Pink?
Pink Opens Up About How She Went From A Rebellious Teen To A Global Star
It doesn’t come as a surprise to learn that Pink was rebellious during her teenage years. I mean, the woman does love her biker jackets and she’s known for songs that sometimes challenge societal norms, and even presidents. Her latest single, “Trustfall”, is about letting go of the fears and the expectations of society and just living life as freely as one needs to be to be happy.
Raised in Doylestown, Pa., by divorced parents Jim, a Vietnam War veteran, and Judith, a nurse, Pink had a normal upbringing. During her early teenage years, she went rogue and started doing drugs to the extent that her parents had to kick her out of the house. At age 16, she’d begun to re-evaluate her life choices.
“I signed up for this life. I came into this world very resilient, very relentless, with a sick sense of humor, thick skin and a bleeding heart. So those f—ers couldn’t mess with me. They had nothing on my mother or my teachers,” Pink recalled. “I lived a lot of lives before I changed my name to Pink.”
She also revealed that she survived early pop stardom by giving off a don’t-mess-with-me attitude, which she thought was crucial to surviving the misogyny and the unforgiving lens of tabloid culture of the 2000s.
She went through this time period with other famous female stars like Christina Aguilera, Beyoncé, and Britney Spears.
Pink On Feeling “Protective” Over Britney Spears And Wishing Her Happiness Post-Conservatorship
Since the end of her conservatorship in November 2021, Spears has been pretty outspoken about the trauma she faced as a young woman in the entertainment industry.
“People think I was picking on Britney on [my 2001 single] ‘Don’t Let Me Get Me,’ but I’ve always felt like a big sister to her,” Pink says of her feelings towards the “Circus” singer, “I’m very protective of her, and she’s the sweetest person in the world.”
Even though they’re not in touch at the moment, Pink still wholeheartedly wishes “her well. I cover her in light all day long.”
