When all’s said and done, Disney is perhaps considering that one of their biggest franchises should be led by Johnny Depp again.
While they’ve had a rocky – very rocky – relationship in the past, they may be willing to put it all behind to thrill fans with one more Jack Sparrow-led movie and of course, line their pockets while they’re at it.
According to CBR, Disney has two scripts in development, with one of them eyeing Johnny Depp. Well…
Disney Quietly Contemplating Adding A 6th Installment To Their ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ Franchise
While nothing’s been concluded yet, DisInsider reported that a Disney source has confirmed that the studio is quietly putting together what would become a new installment in the action-adventure franchise.
At this point, I think Disney is still putting feelers out here to see what the fan reaction will be like. Are we bored and ready to move on, or is Jack Sparrow still the relevant anti-hero he was when “The Curse of the Black Pearl” hit our screens.
Since 2011, Disney has been trying, and sadly failing, to successfully develop a sixth installment. At some point, it felt like this dream would finally come true, but the Amber Heard controversy caused Depp and Disney to have such a massive falling out Depp swore off starring in a Disney movie in the future.
Considering this was said when tensions were still high, could it be possible to convince Depp to carry the torch one last time and bring Sparrow back to the seas for one more scallywaggery?
Disney Reportedly Developing Two Scripts Set In the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ Universe
In December 2024, Variety reported that Disney is very much interested in getting another Pirates movie into production. At the time, it was said that the studio was yet to contact Depp or even attempt to negotiate his return.
Prior to this, franchise producer Jerry Bruckheimer had previously announced that two scripts were in development. “Jeff Nathanson is working on a script.
We have another one…We have two, and we don’t know who’s gonna win the horse race at this point. But hopefully in the next month, I’ll have a script, and maybe Disney will want to make it,” he said in June 2024.
If the great falling out hadn’t happened, Depp had planned to play the fan-favorite character for as long as it was necessary. “There’s a way to end a franchise like that… I planned on continuing until it was time to stop,” the actor testified in 2022.
