Early last year, famous YouTuber Logan Paul and KSI launched an energy drink “PRIME” and it didn’t take long for the drink to go global, with countries like the U.S., U.K., and Australia becoming its highest consumers. However, the company recently came under fire after it was discovered that the amount of caffeine in it is way higher than that of Coca-Cola, and another popular energy drink called Red Bull.

It was discovered that a 12 oz can of “PRIME Energy Drink” contains 200mg of caffeine meanwhile a Coca-Cola can of the same oz contains only 34mg of caffeine. Comparing it with an 8.4 oz can of the popular “Red Bull” energy drink which contains 80mg of caffeine, the difference is clear.
Following the discovery, New York Senator Charles Schumer wrote to Food and Drug Administration on July 9, appealing for Prime energy drink to be investigated as its high amount of caffeine is unhealthy, especially for kids.

According to Associated Press, Senator Schumer’s letter reads, “One of the summer’s hottest status symbols for kids is not an outfit, or a toy—it’s a beverage.”
Schumer proceeded to warn both buyers and parents to be careful lest they purchase the energy drink for their kids and risk them getting health issues. Schumer said, “But buyer and parents beware because it’s a serious health concern for the kids it so feverishly targets.”

Last year, Associated Press reported that pediatricians warned that due to its high amount of caffeine, there might be drastic health issues such as heart problems, indigestion, etc., which might develop in kids who consume the Prime Energy Drink.
Schumer also called the FDA’s attention to the beverage’s online marketing, noting that the difference is next to nothing when compared with its hydration line. He went on to explain that unsuspecting parents might purchase it for their kids.
Emphasizing on investigation, Schumer said, “A simple search on social media for Prime will generate an eye-popping amount of sponsored content, which is advertising,” as he went on to add, “This content and the claims made should be investigated, along with the ingredients and the caffeine content in the Prime energy drink.”

In their defense, the company spokesperson told PEOPLE on July 11 that they never went against FDA rules while producing their energy drink, and that they clearly state that their drinks are not suitable for people under 18.
“PRIME Energy, sold in a can, dropped in 2023 and contains a comparable amount of caffeine to other top selling energy drinks, all falling within the legal limit of the countries it’s sold in,” said the spokesperson.
They continued, “It complied with all FDA guidelines before hitting the market and states clearly on packaging, as well as in marketing materials, that it is an energy drink and is not made for anyone under the age of 18.”
Prime went on to state that they hold their “Consumer safety” at heart because they are their “Top priority.” They also added, that they “Welcome discussions with the FDA or any other organizations regarding suggested industry changes they feel are necessary in order to protect consumers.”
