Star of “Baywatch” Priyanka Chopra and her “Jealous” singer husband Nick Jonas celebrated their daughter Malti Marie’s one year birthday on January 15. Back in January last year, the couple welcomed their daughter via surrogate after staying over 100 days in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).
The couple shocked their social media followers when they announced that they had welcomed their baby girl via surrogate.
“We are overjoyed to confirm that we have welcomed a baby via surrogate. We respectfully ask for privacy during this special time as we focus on our family. Thank you so much,” they wrote at the time.
Priyanka Chopra — Chopra Shares Why She Opted For A Surrogate
Since the birth of her daughter who she prefers to call “M” for short, Chopra has been very private with the circumstances surrounding the birth of her daughter.
In a recent interview with “February cover story of British Vogue,” the actress shared some information on why she couldn’t carry her daughter herself. “I had medical complications,” said Chopra to the outlet.
“This was a necessary step, and I’m so grateful I was in a position where I could do this. Our surrogate was so generous, kind, lovely and funny, and she took care of this precious gift for us for six months.”
She also addressed the critics who condemned her as “lazy” upon hearing that her daughter will be birthed by a surrogate, “You don’t know me. You don’t know what I’ve been through. And just because I don’t want to make my medical history, or my daughter’s, public doesn’t give you the right to make up whatever the reasons were.”
Chopra also spoke of the birth process of her daughter and showered praises on the nurses that handled Malti’s birth. “I was in the OR when she came out.”
“She was so small, smaller than my hand. I saw what the intensive-care nurses do. They do God’s work. Nick and I were both standing there as they intubated her. I don’t know how they even found what they needed in her tiny body to intubate her.”
Priyanka Chopra — Malti Was Welcomed Home On Mother’s Day
Last year’s Mother’s Day marked the day Chopra and Jonas brought their daughter home for the first time. The couple took to their Instagram accounts to share their joy with the world. They called her the “perfect Mother’s Day gift.”
“On this Mother’s Day we can’t help but reflect on these last few months and the rollercoaster we’ve been on, which we now know, so many people have also experienced,” wrote Jonas, 30, while adding, “after 100 plus days in the NICU, our little girl is finally home.”
He continued with, “Every family’s journey is unique and requires a certain level of faith, and while ours was a challenging few months, what becomes abundantly clear, in retrospect, is how precious and perfect every moment is.”
“We are overjoyed that our little girl is finally home, and just want to thank every Doctor, nurse, and specialist at Rady Children’s La Jolla and Cedar Sinai, Los Angeles, who were there selflessly every step of the way.”
