For Reese Witherspoon, she simply didn’t have any control over hers, even though she handled it like a champ and has no regrets going forward.

Reese Witherspoon On How Her Traumatic Experience Turned Her Into An Agent of Change

The Witherspoon we know today is a strong woman who wants to empower other female creatives, but once upon a time, she found herself in a situation that was above her control.

Chatting with Harper’s Bazaar, the actress, who we know has used her platform to campaign for ways to make women feel safe in Hollywood, shared a story from her late teen years where she wasn’t made to feel safe.

The scene happened during the filming of the James Foley-directed psychosexual thriller, where then 19-year-old Witherspoon was told to be naked for a sex scene on a rollercoaster. The “Legally Blonde” star recalled requesting for a stunt double for below-the-waist shots, but it wasn’t something she had control over.

“It wasn’t explicit in the script that that’s what was going to happen, so that was something that I think the director thought of on his own and then asked me on set if I would do it, and I said, ‘No,’” she explained. “It wasn’t a particularly great experience.”

Even though the experience was traumatic at the time, Witherspoon said she didn’t let it stop her from pursuing the career she loved, or even fighting to pave a way for the next generation of creatives.

“I’m certainly not traumatized or anything by it, but it was formative,” the actress added. “It made me understand where my place was in the pecking order of filmmaking.

I think it’s another one of those stories that made me want to be an agent for change and someone who maybe can be in a better leadership position to tell stories from a female perspective instead of from the male gaze.”

This inspired her to start her own company, Hello Sunshine, which has been behind several female-led projects like “Big Little Lies,” “Gone Girl,” “Wild” and “Daisy Jones & the Six.”
