Elvis Presley is still reigning supreme decades after his death, and if you doubt it, then maybe you’ve missed the biopics and his thriving influence in pop culture.
I can’t even begin to count how many animated movies have tried out the famous Elvis Presley look and accent.
In fact, on a good day, if you hear LA, you think Elvis Presley. That’s how much the buzz still surrounding the rock-and-roll legend has trained us.
Elvis Presley – Is Still Getting Richer Even After His Death.
But far from only generating noise, Presley is still getting richer even after his death. At the time of his death, his estate and the family shares of Elvis Presley Enterprises were worth $5 million.
These days, Vanity Fair reports it’s nearing $500 million. According to Graceland’s accounting, over 4000 visitors make their way to 3764 Elvis Presley Boulevard in Memphis at the height of its tourist season.
In fact, the residence is now a certified pilgrimage site. It’s amazing when you consider that Presley purchased the property for just $102,500.
Now, his heir has finally opened up about what it was like growing up in the all-too popular estate.
Riley Keough – Says They Slept At the Legendary Mansion Where Elvis Presley Died
Keough and her family usually made the trip to the estate, especially during Thanksgivings, but they did not sleep over.
However, Keough revealed in her latest interview that they did indeed sleep at the mansion a few times. “There were a few times that we slept [at Graceland],” she revealed.
She then seemingly regretted the need to say that and added, “…but I don’t know if I should say that.” The second floor of the property, where Presley suffered his heart attack, has been off-limits since.
When visitors would come over to marvel at the Colonial Revival–style mansion and Presley’s gold records, Keough would entertain herself by hiding in the grounds.
“The tours would start in the morning, and we would hide upstairs until they were over,” Keough recalled. “The security would bring us breakfast. It’s actually such a great memory. We would order sausage and biscuits and hide until the tourists finished.”
Riley Keough – On Preserving Elvis Presley’s Memory And Why Graceland Brings Her Pain
One of the ways the family preserved Presley’s memory was by retaining the chefs who cooked for him. “When Elvis’s chefs were alive, they used to still cook dinner for us, which was really special,” Keough told VF. “It was very Southern: greens and fried catfish and fried chicken and hush puppies. Cornbread and beans. Banana pudding.”
Despite being the sole heir of the multi-million dollar estate, Keough revealed that even though she shared so many happy memories, the fact her loved ones are buried there has made it a place of pain for her.
“I always had positive and beautiful memories and association with Graceland. Now, a lot of my family’s buried there, so it’s a place of great sadness at this point in my life.”
