Rob Lowe Thought His Career Was Over

Rob Lowe who starred as Sodapop Curtis in 1983’s “The Outsiders” which afterwards turned out to be his breakout movie, is looking back at the days he thought that his career was over. It’s funny how no one would ever think that there would ever be a time when Rob would be worried about the longevity of his career because, after starring in “The Outsiders,” series of other films followed suit, movies like “Wayne’s World,” “St. Elmo’s Fire,” etc. But, in an exclusive interview with ET’s Matt Cohen, Rob revealed that there was a time he didn’t work for two years, it was at that point that Rob became worried that his career might be over.

After starring in the movie The West Wing, Rob got several roles in several other movies and TV shows, Rob is currently working on a new movie titled “Unstable” with his son John. While speaking about the movie, Rob explained that his character is an unstable tech genius who can only be reached or talked to by his “semi-estranged son,” Rob explained that his character, despite being a genius, has issues that made him unstable, the semi-estranged son in the film will be played by his real-life son John.

When it comes to his family, Rob is in no way estranged from his sons, according to Rob, he made a conscious effort to be there for his family, he established a relationship with his sons that even after they have come of age, they’re still close. “I prioritized that relationship and now that they’re older and out in the world, they are still in our lives in a really, really, really consistent big way because that’s the way it’s always been.”

How Rob Lowe Feels About The 40th Anniversary Of “The Outsiders”

As this year marked the 30th and 20th anniversaries of “Wayne’s World” and “Austin Powers in Goldmember” respectively, Rob can’t seem to contain his excitement at how so many years have passed since the release of “The Outsiders.” The movie will be marking its 40 years by next year and it’s still surreal to Rob how much time has passed, Rob explained that the movie was shot the year he was supposed to be in college, he said that whenever he runs into some of his co-stars from “The Outsiders” he feels like he ran into a fraternity.

“40 years of The Outsiders, wow, it feels like yesterday, whenever I see any of my fellow Outsiders cast mates, it’s like running into your fraternity if you were in a frat or if you were in a sorority, those are my college friends. That was the year I would have been going to college. It was the first time away from home, my first dorm experience was basically sharing a floor with [Tom] Cruise, [Patrick] Swayze, [Matt] Dillon and [Ralph] Macchio.”
