Salma Hayek Says That She Was Typecast During The Early Years Of Her Career

She might be one of the most successful actresses in the entertainment world, but that doesn’t mean she always gets what she wants. In fact, Salma Hayek said it took a very long time for her to finally get the roles that she wanted in the industry.

Because of her curves and having always been typecast as the “sexy” Latina in her movies, she never really did get an opportunity to star in comedies until later in her career. Here’s what she has to say about it.

Salma Hayek – Says That She Was Typecast During The Early Years Of Her Career

Speaking to British GQ in a new interview, the Mexican-born Hollywood star says that she had a difficult time during the early years of her career mostly because she was typecast to fit just one certain box: and that was to be the sexy siren on the big screen.

Salma put it this way, “My entire life I wanted to do comedy and people wouldn’t give me comedies. I couldn’t land a role until I met Adam Sandler, who put me in a comedy [2010’s Grown Ups], but I was in my forties!

They said, ‘You’re sexy, so you’re not allowed to have a sense of humor.’ Not only are you not allowed to be smart, but you were not allowed to be funny in the ’90s. Salma Hayek – Opens Up About Her Struggles

Unfortunately, Salma still didn’t get roles that she eagerly wanted even after she won her Academy Award for Frida. She explained, “When I was nominated for an Oscar the types of roles that people offered me did not change at all. I really struggled and I thought that was going to change, but no.”

With that said, Salma definitely knows who she is now and what she wants out of her career, if not also her personal life, too. She said, “I’m at a place in my life where I don’t think my sexuality is the only thing that’s appreciated anymore. But if it was, I wouldn’t care, because I’ve built enough respect around me from the people that really matter that I feel seen beyond that. This is full circle. Now, somebody strips for me.”
