Sarah Michelle Gellar Confirms She Won’t Be Returning For ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ Sequel

Sarah Michelle Gellar has now confirmed where her ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ character will be, and well, let’s just say it’s where we left her in the original 1997 horror movie.

No, ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ is not that kind of horror film where dead people magically reincarnate or evolve to become zombies.

Sarah Michelle Gellar’s Hellen Shivers violently died in the first movie and she is staying that way in the second. No twists, no turns, no complicated plotlines just to bring her hot beauty queen character back.

“I am dead,” Gellar said, squashing all rumors of her return in the upcoming movie, which will see her husband Freddie Prinze Jr. reprise his role as Roy Branston. This doesn’t mean that the sequel will totally happen without some form of contribution from her.

“My best friend [Jennifer Kaytin Robinson] is directing it, so we joke that I have an unofficial job, which is I am continuity,” she explained. “So I’m always the one telling her, ‘Well, that would happen, or that wouldn’t happen with those characters,’ so I do have kind of an unofficial job title.”

The teen-horror-slasher movie follows four friends, played by Prinze Jr., Gellar, Jennifer Love Hewitt and Ryan Phillippe, who find themselves haunted by a hook wielding man. The book was loosely based on a 1973 novel of the same name by Lois Duncan.

What We Know About the Upcoming Sequel For ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’

The sequel for the movie has been in development since February 2023, following a failed TV series reboot in 2021.

At the time, Deadline revealed that Hewitt was still in the negotiation stage to return as Julie James. “If it truly comes together, I don’t even know how I’m gonna feel except extremely overwhelmed and grateful, but’s wild to think about. It’s nice to know that people are excited at the possibility. I think it would be really fun if it came together,” Hewitt said.
