Sarah Michelle Gellar Hints At Unexpected ‘McBuff’ Crossover For ‘Dexter’ Prequel

Sarah Michelle Gellar and Patrick Dempsey are stepping into the dark and thrilling world of ‘Dexter.’ The two stars, known for their iconic roles in ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ and ‘Grey’s Anatomy,’ will appear in the highly anticipated prequel series ‘Dexter: Original Sin’.

On September 16, Gellar took to Instagram to tease their roles, sharing a fun selfie of the two actors dressed in character. She captioned the post, “The crossover you didn’t know you needed (#McBuff?!?)”, a playful nod to their famous past TV shows.

In the series, Dempsey, 58, will play Miami Metro Homicide Captain Aaron Spencer. Gellar, 47, joins the cast as Tanya Martin, the chief of CSI at the Miami Metro Police Department and Dexter’s new supervisor at his forensics internship.

The duo’s roles bring together the nostalgia of their fan-favorite TV personas. Gellar’s portrayal of Buffy Summers, the teenage vampire slayer, spanned seven seasons of ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ from 1997 to 2003.

Meanwhile, Dempsey captured hearts as Dr. Derek “McDreamy” Shepherd in ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ for 11 seasons, from 2005 to 2015.

Fans of both actors have already drawn connections to their other notable roles in the ‘Scream’ franchise. One fan humorously commented, “I would say ‘Scream 2’ meets ‘Scream 3’ ♥︎.” Gellar appeared in ‘Scream 2’ as Cici Cooper in 1997, while Dempsey played Detective Mark Kincaid in ‘Scream 3’ (2000).

A Nostalgic Cast for the ’90s Era

Network executives made a deliberate choice in casting Gellar, Dempsey, and Christian Slater (who plays Dexter’s father, Harry) to reflect the show’s 1990s setting. These actors, who rose to prominence during that decade, still enjoy considerable fame today.

The prequel series will delve into Dexter Morgan’s origins, chronicling his transformation from a student to a methodical serial killer.

As detailed in the show’s synopsis, ‘Dexter: Original Sin’ will explore how young Dexter begins to lose control over his violent urges.

Under his father Harry’s guidance, Dexter learns to channel his dark instincts, adopting a strict code that allows him to kill those who “deserve” it while evading the law.

This internal struggle intensifies as Dexter takes on a forensics internship with the Miami Metro Police, where his secret could unravel at any moment.

Continuing The Legacy of Dexter

‘Dexter: Original Sin’ builds on the legacy of the original ‘Dexter’ series, which starred Michael C. Hall as Dexter Morgan and Jennifer Carpenter as his sister, Debra Morgan.

The original series ran for eight seasons from 2006 to 2013, and also inspired the 2021 miniseries ‘Dexter: New Blood’. Now, this prequel is set to reignite fans’ passion for the story with its fresh perspective on Dexter’s early years.
