Scarlett Johansson – Felt Forced To Portray Bombshell Beauties

Hollywood used to seem like a world full of glamour and glitz. But then came the Me Too era. And increasingly, critics have taken away that glamour to look behind the curtain. As a result, actress Scarlett Johansson just revealed her own criticism via Variety.

And the actress shared that producers and directors pushed her into transforming herself for bombshell beauty roles. For instance, Scarlett found opportunities in “Lost in Translation,” “Girl With the Pearl Earring” and “Match Point.” And what all those films shared? A way for Johansson to portray a woman desired by men.

“I did ‘Lost in Translation’ and ‘Girl With the Pearl Earring,’ and by that point, I was 18, 19,” recalled the actress. “And I was coming into my own womanhood and learning my own desirability and sexuality. I was kind of being groomed, in a way, to be this what you call a bombshell-type actor.”

But even as Scarlett portrayed “the other woman and the object of desire,” she found challenges. “And I suddenly found myself cornered in this place. I couldn’t get out of it,” she added.

However, the actress admitted, “It would be easy to sit across from someone in that situation and go, ‘This is working.’ But for that kind of bombshell, you know, that burns bright and quick and then it’s done.” As a result, Scarlett worried that she would lack opportunities as she got older. “It was an interesting, weird conundrum to be in,” admitted Johansson, now 38. “But it really came back to working at it and trying to carve a place in different projects and work in great ensembles.”

Scarlett Johansson – Looks Ahead To New Roles

However, the actress managed to take control of her life and career. For instance, Johansson recalled how her Black Widow role in “Iron Man 2” seemed “underdeveloped and over-sexualized.” But Scarlett teamed up with director Jon Favreau and Marvel studios head Kevin Feige to create a stronger role.

And the actress feels she “became objectified and pigeonholed” despite that success. As a result, Johansson worried, “I wasn’t getting offers for work for things that I wanted to do.” However, she also admitted, “I think people think I’m 40 years old.” And that assumption “somehow stopped being something that was desirable and something that I was fighting against.”

But now Scarlett feels determined to forge ahead. She looks at her first project in the live action film world. “Asteroid City” lands in theaters in June 2023. And after that role, Johansson will star in “My Mother’s Wedding” with Sienna Miller and Emily Beecham.
