Earlier this month, Johnny Depp made a surprising appearance at the MENA premiere of his French-language movie “Jeanne Du Barry.” There, he made a speech praising Saudi Arabia’s growing film industry. Here’s what he said.

On its second day, the Red Sea International Film Festival received Johnny Depp for the screening of the historical drama, where Depp played the opulent French King Louis XV. The movie was directed by French actress and filmmaker Maïwenn, who also stars in the film.

Maïwenn attended the event alongside Depp, later posing with the “Pirates of the Caribbean” actor and the CEO of the Red Sea Film Foundation, Mohammed Al Turki.

During the event, Depp shared his thoughts on Saudi Arabia’s entertainment industry, saying to Arab News, “I believe that what’s happening here in in Saudi with regards to various sort of expressive outlets, creative outlets – art, cinema everything – is opening up sort of beautifully.

I also think that since opening up, like giving more opportunity to anyone and everyone. What seems to be really thriving beautifully here is youth culture.”

He further described the festival’s theme “Your Film, Your Festival” as a beautiful one, due to its focus on appreciating the creatives that make entertainment possible.

Another thing that caught the star’s attention was Saudi Arabia’s beautiful landscapes. He was so enamored with the sights that he imagined that shooting a film there would be a wonder.

“Just the idea of shooting the film here. It’s so beautiful. And there’s such mystery, there’s so many beautiful vistas and visually stunning but the history… the history that’s here is fascinating.”

“I would come here happily to make a film. The word artist is not one that I use for myself, but you can use it for filmmakers. And everybody seems to understand the artists’ lane,” he said.
